X3 heavily modded... if your crafty there are X-wings and Tie fighter mods... as well as dozens of others... very cool game, highly recommend it, big mod community. X4 has been rumored to be in development.

I picked up the X3 games in a steam sale but I haven't played them yet. Are they playable with kb/m or a controller? Or do you need a joystick?

X3 series. I am currently playing X3 Terran Conflict. It is a massive game, absolutely massive. Egosoft has released a TON of additional content for the game, free, and the modding scene is huge.

Only draw back is it can need a beefy system when you get 1000's of complexes and no multiplayer. It has a steep learning curve as well.
