The truth about Sandy Bridge "VID" (Voltage range) - Page 3

Actually your OP also gave me a lot of insight, So I guess 4.8Ghz is not for my 24/7 everyday since it needs 1.452v.. Going back down to 4.5 or 4.6 with 1.385v

Yeah if you've been at that vcore for awhile at full load, I think you *will* see degradation on your minimum vcore you need for stability. You may want to retest your lower overclocks to see if the minimum vcore has risen on any. I'm busy beating the living hell out of my first 2600k by running it at 5 ghz 1.51v load HT on (I was at 5.3 ghz HT off 1.59v for a few days till eventually Black Ops would BSOD before being able to load a map); trying to see just how much abuse and torture the chip will take, and how much it will degrade completely, as well as at what voltage any futher degradation will stop.

And I'm not even degrading it with prime (it's WAY too hot to run prime at those voltages, anyway); it's just degrading using windows or playing bad company 2 or black ops or other games, and the temps are no higher than the 70's....

Once that's done I'll retest at 4.5 to see how hig h that rose, too. Last test at 4.8 ghz would BSOD in 20 seconds with prime small FFT at 1.392v, while 4.7 was solid. I don't care if I kill this chip; I still have my other one that can do 4.5 ghz at 1.260v load 12 hour blend stable, but even that degraded some...used to do 1.236v at 4.5 ghz and 1.416v rock solid at 5 ghz....now needs 1.440-1.452 at 5 ghz....

I've never actually test anything other than 4.8Ghz..
I havent been able to read other degradation reports aside from your but that 1.260 is quite shocking actually!

How many months has your 4.5Ghz at 1.236 before it started to degrade?

It degraded within 3 days, because I kept trying to get into that freaking 5 ghz club.
The repeated attempts at getting 1-3 hour primes stable at 5 ghz 1.404v caused my 4.5 ghz overclock go from 1.236v to 1.248v, as well as that 5 ghz to start failing. Then several days of gaming in bad company 2 at 1.428v at 5 ghz caused further degradation (of both clocks), so now I need 1.260v at 4.5 ghz and 1.440-1.452v at 5 ghz.

I suffered NO degradation at all when I left the cpu originally at 4.5 ghz 1.236v without going higher.

And people kept saying "you won't get any degradation if you're just at 1.4v at 5 ghz." Well, they were completely WRONG. Once again, I was right.

I have proof now.

What's the maximum VID?

1.52v.
Now, set that in your BIOS, with a reasonable overclock (at least 4.5 ghz at the minimum), do NOT use loadline calibration, and then run Prime 95 small FFT's (not blend) or Linpack with AVX extensions (requires SP1), and then tell me what the vcore reads....

(Hint: The max VID assumes you are NOT using loadline calibration, which goes out of official specs).

I'm not taking credit for that--it was some other poster yesterday who mentioned this....but I can't find where it was...it was in one of the 2600k threads....
It wasn't this was it? http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/...l#post13574859

@compudaze

Now that you mentioned it on that thread, a friend of mine also told me that his 2600K degraded so fast but when he tried the CPU again like after a week it was back to where it was initially.. he is not sure if the CPU actually degraded or something was just messed up and the days of rest on the CPU and board fixed the issue.

To me is a matter MOBO+PSU+CPU combo. I find very dificult to believe than the chip degrade in days or weeks in the 1.32-1.38 range. I'm not saying that it cannot happen but it is very strange.
If that were true there would hundreds of degraded chips reported cases.

Looks like I'll be running at 4.4 @ 1.34 w/ no LLC until there's some more conclusive data (was at 4.8 @ 1.38-1.39 / 1.39 - 1.4v) for less than a week. Sucks there's not more concrete evidence

1.390 is pretty good for 4.8Ghz, I recon its still 24/7 safe for the next 3-5yrs.
