Best air cooler

Thread Starter
Thinking about getting rid of my H70 (its not performing as I hoped it would, even with 1900RPM fans, which just makes it too noisey anyway)

current temps @ 4.8ghz 1.364Vcore are:
idle 38c
load 75c

my ambiants aren't too high, its pretty chilly in my room, even more so when I open the window

so looking for a good air cooler that not only performs well but it must be quiet!
price I don't mind just as long as its not going to cost as much as an XSPC RASA kit, so budget up to around £60, I could stretch slightly

What's with the Noctua lately? I mean, it looks great, better than my V8 but really, does it give that much difference between something like Megahalems or what? Someone tell me lol

Also, if you do get either one of these, try replacing them with 1krpm fans, that'll do good instead of those that might spin 2krpm

Megahalems is good, but its surface area is not as large as the D14 or Silver Arrow. At greater than 4.0GHz on a i7 920, the Megahalems falls behind those two. He does not want loud fans so those two heatsinks are what is recommended for performance and low noise. Plus the stock fans on those heatsinks are already good.

I see, thanks for the info. (I'm not really into looking around the market, so I'm outdated a lot of the time, need to update my brain with new "hardware" lol)

both of those coolers look great, they wouldn't fit in with my colour theme but i'm sure i could work something out

both also look like they could have a 3rd fan, would this help any? or are the 2 fans plenty

also, do either cover any of the ram slots? i'm using all 4 slots on my board

Yeah they do consume the RAM slot closest to the CPU, but it depends on the height! Some RAM such as Dominators, Vengeance and G-Skill Ripjaws, all have tall heatsinks, only way to get round it is to either shave a bit off the heatsinks, or remove them.

Sometimes you can squeeze the cooler in, but I wouldn't advise it. Also, if you're looking for something that looks good, try the Cooler Master V8, it's a pretty nice looking cooler, along with the V6GT and Dark Knight.

Overall, I'd suggest air over the H70 any day, my H50 is performing so badly, it's unbelievable, even with Cooler Master Sickles in push pull, make so much noise whilst doing it too! Absolutely pants! Never going the cheapo water cooling ever again, the only thing it does do is take away the need for a huge heatsink! Which in my opinion is 100% needed! Unless you spend £200 or more on a water cooling kit.

Also, adding a third fan provides little to no performance upgrade, just an addition to noise, which I can't stand, so good luck with that

Good luck!

I might have to stretch my budget and get a full water cooling loop, I really don't want to loose ram for my cooler, I might just stick with the H70 for now even with the horrid temps

Whack some new TIM on the H70, some gentle typhoons or similar, and see how that goes! Also note that you can change where the fans are around the case, you may be sucking hot air from inside the case through your radiator, to eliminate this you may need to redirect air flow, have a play round with it, see what works best, and if it comes down to being a faulty H70 RMA it, I hear there had been a few dodgy ones!

I wish the Hydro series were good performance coolers, but they just aren't, there are cooler, cheaper, quieter air coolers, so why go for the Hydro Series, it's one big scam, just has the water cooled logo that makes people who don't know much go, "whaaaaat!? That uses water to cool your CPU!? COOL", no, no, no it isn't check my temps! 46C idle and like 67C load at 3.5ghz!

I wouldn't say the H70 is a bad cooler, but there are certainly some far better ones out there. If not for my worrying about it blocking my RAM slots, I'd probably invest in the D14.

What sort of fan configuration are you running? I'd thought about buying one and mounting in the top of my cosmos, with the back plane fan bring air in, and the fan next to it taking air out as well. From what I've heard the hydros are really picky about the configuration of the fans being used.

If you haven't gone push/pull yet, you could try that out. Adding shrouds and replacing the fans with NH-12's may not be a bad idea. That would eliminate a lot of the noise caused by the fans being so close to the rad.
