Can you post up your "/etc/X11/xorg.conf file" contents?

you are looking for ~/.asoundrc or /etc/asound.conf, if you just want your profile to be affected, edit or create ~/.asoundrc and following this guide:
(its for arch linux but should still work for ubuntu, sorry i'm not sure what distro you are using haven't read the entire thread yet.) you can change things up in that file, to tell the OS which sound card to use as default.
