450 GTS Overclock help?

Thread Starter
Hey folks before I get to the questions I just wanted to say how great these forums are, been instrumental in helping me with overclocking as I'm relatively new to it.

I recently upgraded pretty much my whole computer, bought a lot of parts from a friend who was doing the same, but I went out and bought a new 450 GTS for cheap. My issue is that when ever I try to push my card past my stable OC speeds(see below) it's like the drivers will crash on me and the speeds will reset back to stock or half-stock when stressing in OC scanner. No artifacts, or screen flashes or even crashing yet while trying to overclock this, it's like it just quits on me. As it stands with the current speeds I can run crysis 2 with everything on extreme on my 42' 1080p TV so I really shouldn't be wanting more, but that's beside the fact:p.

I'm kind of at a loss for what might be the root cause, I even tried upping the voltage to 1.087 since on stock's the temp doesn't get above 57ºC w/ the fan at 50%. So I really think I would be able to push it further than what I have it at if it wouldn't keep cutting out on me. Not sure if it's just a driver issue or maybe some other hardware problem, but I've got the important parts listed in my profile. Thanks for your time.

What drivers are you on?

Some cards just dont like to be OC'd and unfortunately the 450 certainly wouldn't have won the chip binning process.

Try and go in 50mhz increments until you get unstable then got by 25 or 10 until you find the limit. Then start upping the V. Dont just try for a number work up to it then when it gets unstable give her a little more juice.

Current driver version is 267.59. I have read that some cards don't and quite frankly I'm more than happy to be where I'm at right now, just now that I've got a taste for it I don't want to stop till I find that wall haha. Thanks for the speedy response.

Well having of and still using 450 gts's in SLi since they came out I will attest that these drivers are garbage for the card... Going to try the 270.xx later today after work...

That said, I like Afterburner for OC'.

A reset is indicative of a failure with the card to process the setting, probably memory related, but not exclusive to memory.

For a quick and dirty, set to stock, up the mhz 5-10, no more that 25 and run something like furmark/kombuster and look for graphical artifacts... once you start getting them, write down the hz that it happened at and the hz you were at before them.

Reset that back to stock, and do this for ram until the card craps out/resets.

Now get into the voltages and pick up with the gpu hz and see if upping V reduces or takes away the artifacts, these steps should be very small.

Once you have an idea as to what the card will do under these conditions, I would suggest taking a little of the top of the hz, saving these settings as a profile, and heading into some games or proper benchmarks... Heaven is a good one for testing for card crashing, especially in DX11.

This process could take a couple hours, so get a snack and bring some patience. As always mileage will vary, watch temps, and be VERY CAREFUL with Voltage increases with this card on a stock cooler, GTS 450's RARELY have cooling installed on the VRM's and THIS is the number one cause of card failure and poor OC.

Thanks for all the help guys! I did a driver sweep and reinstalled the latest, got rid of a bunch of old crap and followed what you said silicon. Currently sitting at:

Voltage----1.087
Core
945MHz
Memory---2050MHz

It's stable in game, played crysis 2 for a few hours with no crashes or artifacts of any kind. Also the temp doesn't get above 65ºC when stressing with Furmark, and doesn't jump above 60ºC in-game after a few hours. So my next question would be what is the safest, highest voltage I can go to, temperature permitting? From Levontraut's post I take it up to 1.125V is ok, just wanted some confirmation from people who know their stuff. I'm pretty happy with where I'm at now so no real need to push it much further, I'd just like to know in case I do want to push it to the max.

Edit: So after some browsing online I've read that up to 1.162V is safe as long as the temps are fine, which is the max afterburner will let me up it anyways. Just wanna make sure it's safe and won't mess with the cards lifespan as long as the temperatures are under control.

The temp that is reported (generally) on these cards is the gpu core temp, unfortunately none of the gts450 cards that I am familiar with have any direct/software ware to read and or report the temp of the vrm's nor a good listing of what is good or not good as far as those temps are concerned.

If you push the voltage you may need to look into some kind of aftermarket cooling... you'll know you found this limit when the card resets or crashes... Part of this issue is that the hs normally overhangs the voltage regs and as the core heats up, in turn heats up the hs, and that in turn acts a bit like a heating blanket over the vrm's heating those up too... as they heat they require more voltage to overcome the inefficiency incurred when conducting through a heated material... and presto... more heat... thus your in the crash-tastic zone due to some voltage fluctuation...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voltage_droop

Not directly related, but sorta describes the phenomena.

Wicked, thanks for all the help. I think I have hit the max I'm gonna test with what I posted above, which at the moment can pretty much max out any games I want to play on 1920x1080. Unfortunately going back to my 1440x900 monitor is no longer an option as I have now discovered how amazing games look in 1080p, at least until I upgrade my monitor. Anyways thanks again guys I'm now hooked on lurking here, tons of helpful info.
