Strange issue with new HIS Radeon HD5770

Thread Starter
Hi all.

A couple of days ago, i received the new HIS Radeon HD5770 video card i ordered.

Upon installing it in my PC and powering up, everything worked fine. But i have discovered a very strange problem that i cant figure out.

Everytime i turn off my computer for a length of time, then turn it back on, i get nothing on my screen, the fan on the card spins at 100% and a red light is on underneath the cooler. However, i get no beeps from the internal speaker on my motherboard, unless i try to restart the PC using the reset button, it makes a longish beep.

So here is the strange part, if i turn the computer off, then back on again, the card works fine. Flawlessly in fact. I am using the PC right now with no issues. Games run smooth as silk, no lock ups, no artefacts, nothing.

What could be causing this strange occurrence?

I have a Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H Motherboard and a Corsair HX-650W Power Supply (which replaced a faulty TX-650). So power doesnt seem to be an issue.

Anyone else had a problem like this?

Cheers.

Nathan.

Not sure man. Maybe try re seating, and reconnecting the PCI-E connector power to the card? Maybe lose or bad connection?

How long does the screen stay blank? If you leave it does it eventually come on?

What drivers are you using? Some of the older drivers would freeze my pc when the computer turn the screen off after not using it for 10mins. I would go download the new 11.4 drivers, They have been great with my 5770's. http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles...lypreview.aspx

I tried reseating the card a triple checked all my cable connections and they are all fine.

I waited awhile to see if the screen would come on but it didnt, This is also not a driver issue as it happens as soon as the computer is turned. The computer doesnt even post until i restart it.

At the moment, i dont really wish to RMA the card as I am unsure if the card is even the issue here. Because i was using my IGP since i built the PC, i wasnt using any of my PCIE slots. So it might be an issue with my motherboard. Its got me rather confused.

But anyway. In a couple of weeks, i am going to buy a second 5770 as i always intended to run two in crossfire. Ill test it out with the new card as a single when i get it and see what happens. If the problem still occurs, then i guess itd be the motherboard, i dont think its the power supply.

Ok guys. I have found another problem.

Im not too sure if its the card, the cards bios, or the drivers. But i have noticed that at the desktop, the fan always stops momentarily, then starts again. This happens about 3, maybe 4 times every 10 minutes. I dont think it spins down during games, as i was running MSI After Burner showing my GPU temp and Fan speed while gaming and the GPU temp stayed at 55c, and the fan speed throttled up to 35% and stayed there.

Im still going to wait until i get my second card in a couple of weeks so i can test that.

That is the video card i have. If anyone wanted to know.

One of my 5770's is the same, And the fan should Not stop spinning! You never told use what drivers you where using?

Edit: My fan stays at 34% and kicked up to 47% when gaming. It should not stop!

Im using driver version 11.2. I know it shouldnt be stopping, which has got me a little on edge. But i will be testing my second 5770 in 2 weeks time as a single card for awhile to see if it acts up in the same way.

The game i was playing with after burner running was Need for Speed Hot Pursuit (the new one of course). Temps never went above 56c in the whole 30 minutes i was playing it for.

It has two options. PEG and PEG1. I assume PEG1 is the second PCIE slot. I have it set to PEG. It was previously set to PCI, but switching to PEG didnt make a difference.

Also, I have determined that the problem with the fan shutting off briefly then coming back on is not a driver issue, as it happened when i was in the BIOS.

Im thinking that its maybe something related to the cards power or video bios that has a fault somewhere?

Edit: The fan doesnt completely stop spinning, but it does completely lose power it seems. It just spins back up before it has a chance to stop spinning completely
