New system new sound

Hey guys, basically I'm building a new system and I wanted it to be as different as possible from my last systems, and something I have always complained about in gaming is the lack of positional sound I get with my crappy speakers. So in this new system I'm putting a Xonar DX (don't ever plan to crossfire) in it.

But then there comes the dilemna of choosing headphones for it. I am not an audiophile and this is my first time ever mucking around with things like soundcards and headphones that cost more than $2. My friends all recommend me plantronics 367, which they've all had for 6 months or longer (about 6 friends) and I was going to get it originally, but then I started doing some research and a lot of sites talk about... well, other headphones.

My budget for the headphones is $150 (zalman mic is budgeted seperately), there's nothing else I can spend my money on for the system in terms of hardware upgrades, so, are the plantronics worth it?

Let me explain: I have been reading a lot of reviews and craploads of info on speakers, DACs, soundcards, and headphones, but I'm not an audiophile and I don't feel that I can spend $150 on headphones without listening to them first. And I have listened to the plantronics and they are better than anything I've ever heard, but I want the sound to be as amazing possible because slightly fancier graphics (alright BF3 has me impressed...) wouldn't impress me more than a friggin amazing sound.

TL;DR Basically what is the life expectancy of plantronics equipment and is the sennheisser HD555's worth the extra $135 dollars over a 367 (including the cost of the microphone as plantronics headsets come with one attached).

Please feel free to recommend other headphone gear in any price range up to $150 (open or closed doesn't matter), keeping in mind that I don't wish to take them around for walks and only really wish to use them for gaming (95% of what I do in front of computers is gaming) and want good positional sound as I have no problem with the onboard and sound setup I have now except for it's positional sound.

Issue isn't really life expectancy. It's quality. The HD555s should be as low as 80 dollars or at least was a few weeks ago.

The AD700s with a sound card is what I would recommend you. The Xonar DX is a nice card for the price and mostly for music, but does imo pretty well in games.

Believe it or not, the sound card is what's going to give you most of your positional cues in the immediate first step up. It's a lot better than your on board. Simply plugging in a nice headphone into onboard will only allow you to hear the max of what your on board is capable of. For that reason, you need a sound card.

I would not recommend anyone Plantronics headset.
