Because they can. That won't stop them from making money. Nvidia tried to skimp out on parts to make a bit more money. Having gtx 590 become a big fail ( not saying it is) won't affect the company what so ever. Ya right now it's a small issue. AMD will profit from it but guarantee they just gonna release a new card
That'll function and everyone will forget about it.
This is a reason why people shouldn't jump the gun to buy a video card. Wait a few days. Wait for the 500 sites that will get the card for free and overclock the **** out of it.
The large majority of cards that have been reported to die were cards that were both overvolted and overclocked.
There have been a few cases of cards running at stock and dying, but i'd put that number at around...what, 4-5? Out of the hundreds that have shipped? It's getting a lot of publicity and people are blowing it way out of proportion.
However, it still does not excuse the fact that a card running at stock should theoretically not just fail like these cards supposedly have. And for an enthusiast-level, top-tier card like the 590 is supposed to be it should be able to OC with plenty of headroom and not explode when clocks/voltages are increased by, say, 5-10%.
To be fair though, there really is no way anyone can verify how some end users ran their cards when it dies, all we have is the word and forum posts of some people who claim that they were run at stock when they died. Not saying I don't believe them, but we don't need to make it a bigger deal than it is.
The VRM issue is a big problem, but again, running the GTX 590 at stock and having it die is still out of the norm right now.
I guess I will find out for sure when I get mine next week and run it at stock.Edited by jcde7ago - 4/1/11 at 12:29pm
