Suggestions on i5 Build

Thread Starter
I've wanted a new laptop for the longest time and spent hours researching in order to make sure I was getting EXACTLY what I wanted. The only laptop that provided everything I wanted was the newest Macbook Pro w/ windows installed and nearly all the upgrades, setting me back over $2600... For a laptop? Not gonna happen. The other candidate was an HP envy, however they have yet to refresh with sandy bridge processors and no longer carry a version with a high-def display, so that was a deal breaker as well.

Disappointed and determined to find the perfect computer I decided that the only way I was going to get everything I wanted was to build my own desktop. Sacrificing ultimate portability, I set off to research the interwebs on how to do just that. After about hours and hours of research I finally have an idea of what I'm going to do. For now my goal is to build an sub-ultimate powerhouse which I can continue to upgrade throughout the next 3-4 years. I will be using this computer for virtually everything including 3D modeling, photo editing, school work, gaming, internet, and perhaps video editing (if I buy a new camera with video capability in the future).

Already, I have purchased a Lian Li PC-9F case which I found to be just the look I was going for. I also picked up a Seasonic X650 because there was an amazing deal on Newegg for just $110.

The rest of my build is planned as follows...

CPU: Intel i5-2500k
GPU: MSI GTX560ti Twin Frozr II 1GB
MOBO: Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD5-B3
Disc Drive: Sony CD/DVD Burner
Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar Black 650gb 7000rpm
RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 2x2gb DDR3 1600mhz
Other: Wireless Adapter
OS: Windows 7

I'll probably run this setup, or something similar, for a while before I start upgrading things. I'd like to get an SSD but don't want to take the plunge now when the price is expected to continue to drop. I also won't upgrade my processor for a while. I'm hoping that more models of the unlocked SB i7 will be released. I may also put in another GTX560ti in the future.

Again, this is just an outline. The only things I already have purchased are the case and PSU. Any insight, reviews on above products, or suggestions are more than welcome.

Also, for some reason I'm thinking I read somewhere about how after installing a certain driver, while using a certain p67 motherboard, a certain controller became disabled. I'd like to steer clear of this issue if anyone can recall what I'm talking about.

personaly, I had been pondering the same thing... but for a mobo I opted for the Asus Maximus iii Gene... and a Nzxt Vulcan case... course that is an 1156 socket and a mATX formfactor... but that was the road I chose to go down... everything looks sweet, with room to spare when upgradeing

GPU is fine, sandy bridge i7-2600k has been out since release. For 3d Rendoring, editing and the likes it will help. add another $100 to your budget. board you have selected is great. Swap the harddrive for a Samsung F3 1TB, approx $65. unless you absolutely need wireless, that card should be dropped. If your doing any online gaming it will potentially cause your perceived lag.

Depending on if how high your going to OC you will need a better hsf.

I may just wait for the new Z67 motherboards to come out before I start purchasing stuff... That will give me more time to save money and I'll be getting a better overall setup...

I know the i7-2600k is out now. I'm saying, if they release more versions of the i7-2xxx that are unlocked...

These are it for Sandy Bridge chips that are unlocked. The next chips will be Ivy Bridge, which are said to have the first ones compatible with 1155 boards... I think you meant z68 boards.

If you have to have wireless, gotta know what standard you are using IEEE 802.11 a,b,g or n?

here this should do u
