Cathodes wont fully light up

Thread Starter
Ok so Iv got a power adapter and I was hoping to have 4 cathodes plugged into it. This was not going to be inside a computer case which is why I needed the power adapter. The power adapter is rated for 12VDC and 5000mA. So there is enough current for them. I guess the only other thing that could be wrong is the voltage somehow? Even with only 1 light plugged in it will still not fully light up. Anybody know whats going on here and if there is a way to fix it??

can you plg it straight into your psu to see if the power supply that you want to use actualy works??

cold cathodes take loads of power to start up and get worm etc..

The PSU that I want to use IS the one they are on now... =/ I think I may have figure out my problem....apparently the wire length matters a lot on these things. So me adding a measly 20 inches seriously screwed them all up....and they are all sleeved too....so this is just great....what a big waste of money and time...
Yea I added only about 6inches of wire to mine and it significantly made them dimmer. The length they are at is pretty much the longest you are gonna get them without losing brightness. At 20 inches I'm surprised they even light up at all. I ended up just having a few inverters placed throughout my case hidden and painted black so they were not too noticeable.

Yup that is it. I just tried 2 cathodes that I didn't no modify and they work perfectly and very bright off of this power adapter. Man...does anyone know anything about THESE CCFL extension cables? I really need some that are 40 inches...=/
post #6 of 27
I was just going to say that the extensions were the problem.

Yea thanks. Just for reference in case anyone else finds this thread and needs help, there are ccfl extension cables that DO work. I got some from HERE and they work(12" or 24"). Now they are a bit dimmer than the cathodes with no extensions, however they light up all the way and are much brighter than with my own extension.

Just out of curiosity what gauge wire did you use to extend? Did you solder the connections?

The wire was more than twice the thickness. It was 14ga. As I said above you have to use special High voltage AC wire. Well maybe I didn't say that above w-e but just get the cathode extension cables.
I think the wire needs to be a certain length to maintain the frequency of current supplied by the ballast...
