RadoDrill, I see where you are coming from and your information is completely legit. I was simply stating that I never had a problem with extending wires. And all the cathodes I have used use that little black/blue/whatever color it is inverter box and they all interchanged with eachother, both in cars and in computers.

Extending the wire could have very well been the issue. But that depends on what type of cathodes he is using.

Yeah there are a lot of factors involved; my one remark to your earlier comment was that most of the fluorescent car lighting kits I've seen are the larger neons, though there are also smaller cold cathodes for interior/accent lighting (which is what you must have been using) that is identical to the equipment sold by PC modding stores.


It may be that due to the higher currents in the DC supply on cars it's not as sensitive as in a PC, but from experience with CCFLs in PCs more often than not extending the AC wiring causes problems. Although I had a kit way back when that I extended by ~18" without any trouble, IIRC i used 18Ga solid copper wire and de-soldered the connector from the PCB and spliced in the wire between the PCB and the connector; thinking about it in more detail, it could be that the larger gauge wire allowed the current to flow through the majority of the wire thus not drastically increasing the electrical resistivity of the wire.

BTW, thanks for your support in the accuracy of the technical information I provided earlier; it's refreshing to see people who are informed (or at least do some research to keep from posting misinformation)

First:
yes most of the work i do with cars is interior electrical and the smallest wire I use when doing that kind of work is 20-18G. So the cathodes I use(when I use them...I prefer LED's because their more compact and easier to work with IMO, but cathodes are in the end less expensive for people) are ones identical to pc cathodes. Every so often I do underglow for those who want it but the underglow I do is all LED's. Not cathodes. As sealed LED strips hold up to the weathering and wear and tear under the car better than solid acrylic tubes.
