Repaired HD reliability

OK guys I had the 2.5" Seagate 5400.5 320 gig Momentus in my laptop give all kinds of errors. (Sorry didn't think to do screen shots) Windows froze 3x in 5 min.
After a all nighter I finally repaired it.

Before:
Failed DST in SeaTools

I pulled the drive from my laptop and hooked it up in my desktop. Ran windows chkdsk/repair for a few hours (couldn't repair)

Then ran SeaTools for Dos Long Test (repaired 6 errors) over a couple hours
Then in dos it passed the short test.

Then put the drive in the laptop and it failed DST at first. But since then its passed every SeaTools windows test (DST, Short, Long Tests) and HDTune quick and complete error tests.


So how long could this drive last? I've ordered a 500 gig WD Scorpio (we'll see since the site is questionable) but I could give the 320 gig to my son for his PS3 if it is truly repaired and could last awhile.

I don't know. Post the actual SMART data from GSmartControl (since SeaTools doesn't actually give you the data) and maybe we can tell.

OK, so your drive has logged 9870 errors (only last 5 can be viewed). The last 5 show it was unable to read various sectors of the disk. This appears to have happened at least 8822 times. The last of those errors occurred at 3493 hours, while the drive lifetime is 3519 hours. That means they're relatively recent.

Further, the drive has failed to spin up in time at least once.

It has also overheated at least once in the past, and is currently at 46C. This might be due to running it in a laptop, but even in a laptop it shouldn't be getting quite that hot unless you're sitting it on a shag carpet or something.

Long story short, the drive may "work" now, but it doesn't have long to live. You removed the serial number, so I can't look up its warranty status; you'll have to do this yourself.

It works, Which is good.
I just wouldn't rely on it for anything as its on its last legs.
How long it may limp along is anyones guess though. You might get a day and you might get a year or more.

I don't keep sensitive things on here, I copied everything off when I was repairing the drive in the desktop
