questions about setting up tri-fire?

Thread Starter
i've got a 6990 and a 6970 set up in my pc. the problem is that it disables the 6970 and the crossfire option is no longer in my ccc. i had the 6990 installed first with the 11.4 preview drivers and everything worked fine. i recently installed the 6970 and the crossfire bridge together, everything booted to windows fine. it started installing the adapter for the 6970 and it blue screened on me. when it re-booted to windows, everything seemed fine. however, there is no option for crossfire anywhere and ccc disabled the 6970. windows device manager now shows that one of the two 6990 adapters has an error. i've tried installing the actual 6970 drivers along with the 6990 drivers and no help there. i've tried removing the crossfire bridge as well, nothing changes. do i only need the 6990 drivers? is there a specific order and set of drivers i am supposed to use to get everything functioning correctly? if i need to, i can uninstall all the drivers and cards and re-install everything if necessary. i just want to get it right. i appreciate the help, thanks.

Can you install both cards, then uninstall drivers, reboot and install 11.4 to see if it helps?

i will try uninstalling all the amd gpu drivers, re-boot, and install them again after work today. i am hoping that works. if not, i will try the driver sweeper and then everything again. thanks for the replies so far, +rep.

another question: does it matter if the cross-fire bridge is installed when i do any of this? the reason i ask is because i really only have experience with nvidia cards regarding multiple gpu arrangements. it never mattered with the sli bridge when i installed drivers.
As far as I know, you should have the cross fire bridge installed. I always have it installed before I did anything with the drivers.

EDIT: I would try the normal uninstall, reboot, and install process first. It seems driver sweeper has caused some unnecessary issues for some folks. If that do not work, then try out the uninstall, reboot, driver sweeper, reboot, install.

It doesn't matter with AMD either, but obviously you need it connected to run cfx. You should leave it on anyways, you can disable cfx in the driver.

Also, you need to install the CAP, cfx profile application after driver installation, and in 11.4 you have to choose custom and click the CAP manually. All other drivers CAPs are a separate file.

thanks for the heads up. i noticed the cap cfx drivers were separate when i was searching for 6970 drivers earlier.

it looks like everything works now, many thanks!

what i did was: use control panel to 'change' the ati install manager (no option for uninstall). it prompted me to either repair or uninstall everything. once it was done uninstalling, it asked me to restart the pc. once it booted back into windows, i went into my program files and manually deleted all ati and amd folders. then i made sure to wipe them out of my recycle bin. i restarted the pc again. i ran the 11.4 preview drivers (march 23rd release) and checked custom installation. i made sure everything was checked in the options. once they finished installing, it prompted me for another re-boot. when windows started back up, it had a pop-up window talking about crossfire being enabled (success!). went through all the usual places to make sure it was recognizing all three gpu's, and it was. the entire process was done with the crossfire bridge in place.
