I'm running 2x4gb and they are placed in slot 2 & 4 which are further than 1 & 3 but even then the fan still hits the ram on slot 2.

You might drop G.Skill an e-mail and see if they will help you out. We've done a few custom jobs for folks with big heatsinks where we swapped the heatsinks on their RAM for something smaller. G.Skill seems to have pretty good CS, so might be willing to help you out.

Not sure if they will, but worth a check, eh? Few bucks in shipping is cheaper than a new CPU cooler.
