Advice on build (silent, high performance)

Thread Starter
Hello.

I'm planning to buy a new computer, since my old one is now more than 5 years old, and want something that lasts several years in the future.

I've done some research and come up with a list of components. (I'm going to try to build it myself)

Chassi: Fractal Define XL, Black
Motherboard: ASRock P67 Extreme 6 REV B3
CPU: Intel Core i7 2600K 3,4GHz
Graphics: Sparkle GeForce GTX 570 1280MB
PSU: Corsair HX 650W 80+
RAM: Corsair 8GB (2x4096MB) 1600MHz VENGEANCE
Harddrive (SSD): 120GB SSD OCZ Vertex3
Harddrive: 2TB Seagate Barracuda Green
Extras:
DVD-burner: Samsung SH-S223 22X Lightscribe DL SATA Black
Chassi fans: 2x Scythe 120mm Slip Stream Fan, 800rpm
CPU cooler: Zalman CNPS-9900NT

What do you think of this? I'm not too good with components, but based most of it from reviews etc.

Here is what I need from the computer:
  • It needs to be rather quiet (quiet fans and harddrive etc)
  • I'd like to have that chassi, since it's sound isolated and has good design.
  • I need a lot of memory since I'm working with 3d and other graphical programs.
  • I'd like to be able to play games on high settings and resolution.

Is it good that I chose a new cooler for the CPU? (I read that the old one was rather bad, and also not very quiet)

I chose 2 extra chassi fans, mostly because they were very cheap. Are they compatible?

I've looked at different motherboards, and I have pretty much no clue about them. I picked one that supports the CPU that I chose that got good reviews. What are you supposed to look for in a motherboard? (What makes it good?)

Also, does this motherboard support all of the other components that I picked? Including the chassi buttons/fans etc.? I am not sure how to check this.

Is the PSU enough for these components? Do I have to change it if I want another graphics card for crossfire or is it enough? I also want to be able to upgrade my RAM in the future.

Any other thoughts? I would appriciate any feedback!

I'm going to build the computer myself (for the first time). Is there anything specific I need to think about? Any other suggestions?

For sake of future proofing? go for a 850w PSU [or 750 if you'd like] from a reputable brand (corsair, antec, etc.)

Your board/cpu are great, your card is good, and the cooler should be fine. If you want to go completely silent, check out the Noctua DH 14. It's a monster though, make sure it will fit on your board properly.

I never read or heard that any zalman cooler is quiet, so forget that.
And shure get this NH-D14 quiet cools very nice and you should get no problems with temp even in summer. (ok depends on your clocks and where you home is at)
The rest seems very nice! But are these 570ers silent?

If your looking for all of your fans to be quieter then your hard drive then the limiting factor in your setup will be your graphics cards fan. That will be your loudest component without overheating anything. You could either go water or get an aftermarket heatsink for it.

That CPU cooler is trash. Get something else. Take a run over the Air Cooling section or click on my guide in my sig for Air Cooling stuffs.

Thanks for the response!

I've decided to change the CPU cooler to NH-D14 as per your advice.
It appears that the RAM sticks are pretty tall, can you still fit the cooler on the motherboard even with these sticks?

I've also been looking at new PSUs with higher wattage for some future-proofing.

I've found these:
Fractal Design Newton R2, 800W
Corsair HX 850W 80+
Antec Continuous Power 850W

Which one is most silent and stable?
I'm not sure if the Fractal Design one fits better since the same company makes the case I'm getting?

Thanks again!

Hello,
I have a few questions concerning compatibility before I buy my computer.
  1. Does the RAM fit with the motherboard (and cpu+cooler)? Or - why does it not fit? And how would one know if it fits?
  2. Is there anything else in this build that doesn't fit - or is bad?
I'm aiming for a quiet rig, with quiet fans and harddrive.

I will appriciate any feedback! Thanks.

Ram will fit and work with MB and cooler. But far as fans go Noctua fans are some of the best you can get. My whole build is quite, only thing you can hear are the two top 200mm exhausts. Also gonna get 4 more Noctua 120mms to replace rear 120mm exhaust, and 2 side 120mms, and add the 4th as a extra. But the loudest thing in my build is my optical drive, when reading and burning discs.

P.S http://www.overclock.net/intel-gener...-included.html That's my build, and you can see how the NH-D14 looks.
