As an iOS user, Android just seems like a wild mishmash of software and hardware with way too many players being involved, whether it's Google, the carriers, or hardware vendors. With an iPhone, there's only one camp with any sort of say - Apple. The fact that Google is clamping down the platform is appealing to someone like me, since I'm used to an infamously clamped down system already. I don't require the ultimate control over every facet of my device like some people here do. For me, Google pulling back the reigns will mean higher standards, higher quality, and a better experience. Just my honest two cents.
No it wont. It means they're exerting control over the hardware used in Android devices to stop fragmentation, or in other words, low-mid-high end devices. I'll assume they want a level medium where we only really have mid to high end devices.

Google does not need to start controlling Android with a death grip in order to pull in iPhone users.

In order for it to bear the 'Android' name, Google has to approve of it, otherwise you can use the same code under a different name and still get to eat your cake.

I also think Google is treading on thin ice on this part:

Android is linux based.
Linux is covered by GPL
Therefore, the Android source code is covered under GPL, yes?

Doesn't that mean withholding code like this is illegal?
Nope, Linux is licenced under the GPL, meaning anyone is free to modify the source and redistribute, even charge if they like, so long as it's licensed properly.

No, more like a developer might need to have two versions of apps (one for pre 2.1 / one for 2.1+) and even tweak the app for certain devices. From what i've read it can get quite hectic in comparison to the single version a developer would have to write to sell for ipods/iphones.

Halle-*******-lujah. So sick of my Android software bugging around from app to app, phone to phone.

That would make it less open. At least there is more than one market to pick from now. Plus a few other apps that make it easier to sort through the android market mess.

I think a custom ui should be optional and not forced onto people. Give us sense and vanialla android in the same package and I'd love it.

This news is really just a rumor spread by googles competitors. I'm not buying anymore into this story until we hear more.

Oh, android 3.0 source wasn't released because google feared it would end up on phones where it does not belong. The same way that 2.2 and 2.3 ended up on tablets.

But then aren't they going to have to code it in something like java that is platform independent? Why are the apps having problems at this point?

So theoretically I could just install android 3 on any old phone that had hardware fast enough to run it?

The Google G1 already runs Honeycomb, albeit very slowly.

What I want to see from this measure:

- Better administration of the Marketplace, active screening of suspicious apps and alerting the community via a sort of blacklist
- All Android phones have the option to keep the stock Android UI along with manufacturer-made proprietary UI (Sense, Blur, TouchWiz)
- Mandatory update of all devices to at least 2.0 Eclair (come on, 1.5 and 1.6 are old tech)
- Coerce handset manufacturers to push timely updates on all devices, possibly even mandating release of source code
- Provide better Android SDK tools for developers

I just want native GPU utilization on all phones. For god sakes 1ghz phone with jittery transitions and desktops effects are just silly.

I should probably ask you this. If I have a phone that runs android 1.5 or 1.6 or 2.0... why can't I just download updates like you do with windows and magically I have the latest greatest version? What keeps me from having say android 2.0, and updating to 2.3?

Remove the "Farts Button" apps over the Market (try it, go to Casual games section, 4 oout of 10 are the big farts button", force makes to release their drivers in a SDK, and Android will be 10x better than it is. That is, 20x better than iOS.
