Random Computer Shutdowns

Thread Starter
Hey everyone, just had a quick question regarding my setup here. So, yesterday I bought Crysis 1 so I could play it and let Crysis 2 settle a bit before purchasing.

When I started Crysis up, I got through about 45 minutes of playing before I had the game crash on me. Had to end process and restart the game. This happened about twice yesterday and once this morning. However, I've encountered a more interesting issue: my system completely shuts down.

The first time it happened was about 3.5 hours ago. I was just sitting there, not doing anything (not paused, but actually in game), looking at my other screen (completely different computer), when the game locked, then my computer powered down. I believe this happened after about 3 hours of playing. It didn't reboot, just powered down. So, I immediately got concerned and figured that my overclock was unstable. However, then I began reading about other people who were experiencing similar issues, but had no overclocking. So, I decided to leave my vcore where it was, and just reload the game.

About 3 hours of playing went by, and this time I was actually just running along a hillside (not much seemed to be going on), when the game locked and my computer powered down again. So, I'm thinking to myself, I've probably got a bad overclock. The interesting thing is that I've passed a 12 hour blend and a 20 pass IBT [no AVX]. And I hadn't had a shutdown like this after many more hours of playing any other game. In addition, I'm not BSODing, which EVERY time I've ever had a bad overclock I'd BSOD with an x0124.

Can anyone shed any light on this situation? Do I just need to suck it up and increase my vcore? Or could I possibly have a bad PSU? Is it common for computers to shut down when they're not getting enough vcore, instead of throwing up a BSOD?

I'll try and increase my vcore and see if I can get it to happen again. If it does, then perhaps I'm dealing with some other type of issue. Does this issue seem familiar to anyone else?

Additional info:

i5 2500K @ 4.5GHz [1.296v]

Got my GPUs OC'd to 850 MHz Core Clock, 1700 MHz Shader, and 1900 MHz Memory Clock

Running Crysis at all max settings with no AA and vsync on.

place my bet on either the motherboard of psu being the problem...

do you have a backup psu you can use? if you do try using that one for a few hours and see what happens.

also try running your cards at stock.... use furmark to see if your oc is stable btw

USE PRIME95 BLEND OR IBT TO SEE IF YOUR PROCESSOR OC IS STABLE
