For those who were disappointed that Crytek's Crysis 2 for the PC didn't come packed with DirectX 11 support, there's good news... if you're into RPGs, of course. According to Bethesda Game Studios' Todd Howard, The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim will arrive with DirectX 11 support.

But there's a catch, and it doesn't sound promising in regards to taking full advantage of current PC-based hardware. "I guess the real question here is do we take advantage of DirectX 11's big new features and the answer is 'not specifically,'" he told IGN in an interview. "Our graphics work centers around doing things that will look the same regardless of platform, and sometimes that implementation will be different on the 360, PS3, and PC."

IGN's interview covers various topics regarding the upcoming RPG, and doesn't focus on specific platforms until the end. But one of the more interesting subjects covered in the Q&A focuses on possible multiplayer and/or co-operative play features, or in this case, the apparent lack thereof. That said, The Elder Scrolls will remain a single-player franchise with the release of the fifth installment despite the seemingly interesting possibilities.

I wonder if the CryGamers will QQ about this as well? Bethesda is saying that they will be doing essentially what Crytek just did. Sure, DX11 might be there, but it won't be noticeable, just as if Crytek had used DX11.

Thats basically the way it goes. People need to stop thinking that DirectX makes games pretty. Give the programmers some credit. The only real "feature" in DirectX 11 is tessellation. While I would love it if they could do some kind of amazing distant landscape with tessellated scenery its not a deal breaker.

It uses DX11, which brings better multicore support and other optimizations, so it will run better than it would were it some DX9 piece of crap like Crysis 2.

It's not what engine you use, it's how you use it that matters. Also, great art direction doesn't hurt either.

Sigh.

Oblivion was released about since months after the launch of the Xbox 360. Since the 360 was fairly new, graphically it didn't trail that far behind PCs of the time and it's no surprise the Xbox graphics were somewhere between what a mid and high end PC could handle. But Oblivion was released five years ago. Are they really going to shoot for a similar experience across the three platforms with the consoles showing their age? I could care less what version DirectX they use but it should look noticeably better than Oblivion. That's just not going to happen if it's supposed to look the same regardless of platform.
