Also, the down to earth configurations are similar, x86/ x86-64, its everywhere.
Yes, but you make a console use the same x86 as any PC, it'll be hacked in a day, not a year or two. You think it's a coincidence that console manufacturers for the last 20 years haven't used x86?

In my mind, they are not "Consoles". Consoles are dedicated gaming devices such as the NES, SNES, SEGA Genesis, N64, Gamecube....
What all of the above have in common is that they're dedicated to gaming and nothing else. No movies, not browsing the web; gaming. Nice. And. Simple. Just as it should be. I "console" Game to get away from the crashes and instability PC gaming can (sometimes/rarely) involve.
the PS3, 360 and Wii (Wii to a lesser extent) i refer to as media-hubs. They're too PC-like, and everything they can do, my PC can do better. If my PC crashes or dies, i can fix it.
Sadly i think the future lies down the road these media-hubs have carved out. They'll eventually become more "PC like", with the users wanting a similar level of control/freedom which'll only happen after we've heard another few hundred court cases like the Sony VS Geohot malarky...
Not everyone is a PC enthusiast, a lot of people want the most out of their consoles rather than a PC. Yes. consoles are subject to bugs, all software (and hardware) is. PCs are subject to MANY more though, because they do not have fixed hardware.
