[TH] Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim WILL Support DirectX 11, But Limited - Page 8

People seem to forget that when Oblivion first came out it was kind of like the Crysis of its day in terms of needing a high end rig to play it maxed out. It wasn't until the 8800GTX came out that anyone could really play Oblivion maxed out with decent enough frame rates.

Exactly. Oblivion was the graphical king of it's time. It was released in 2006!
EDIT: New Skyrim screens for you non believers.

That "bloody point" is simply the grumbling of self-entitled gamers. PC gamers need to be aware of how reality actually works and not the fairy tale world they seem to believe in:

- You have a better platform or have spent more (way more) money on it? Good for you! That was a personal consumer choice you made. The developers did not ask you to buy/build a gaming PC.

- Console gamers ARE typically happy regardless of what they have, but that is hardly relevant to your complaint. In fact, it only serves to emphasize the absurdity of your claim. If console gamers are completely satisfied with a much lower level of graphics, what incentive does a developer have to spend even more money to push graphics that only a MINUSCULE amount of people can enjoy? This becomes even MORE silly when you realize that PC games generate a MUCH smaller revenue stream than consoles.

- Consoles cannot handle as much as a PC is an indisputable fact. However, that again only serves against your case. Why would a developer waste money pushing graphics when the majority of their profit comes from consoles?

I will always be supportive of improvements in realistic graphics, but I am not dumb or delusional enough to think that developers owe me any special level of graphics or features. I am also not dumb or delusional enough to want developers to sacrifice gameplay and storyline for graphics as a lot of "gamers" on this forum seem so eager for developers to do. Games that are "fun" and "addicting" are way better than games that simply have a lot of bling.
A few flaws in your rant.

Console gamers expect the developer to do their best to get as much out of the system as they can, Why shouldnt PC gamers do the same?

Console gamers arent always happy with everything. They complain just like everyone else does about things they dont like.

Majority of profits coming from various systems all depends on the game being sold. BC2 sold as more than either the xbox or ps3. The original Mass effect sold more on the PC than the consoles. PC gamers are much more picky about what they choose to spend thier money on. Word of mouth often puts Games into an early grave on the PC, notice the terrible sales of mw2 and blops, cod4 sold more than either of them on the PC.

Generally by developing a game for th Console and PC requires gameplay to be sacrificed, look at crysis 2, crysis 1 and 2 are entirely different games, and gameplay. They had to make sacrifices for the consoles. Take a look at Red orchestra 2, The developers have already stated that the goals they have for the game make it impossible to do on a console, without compromising thier goals. When making a game on consoles, you have to aim low, its just how it is.

I'm pretty excited about Skyrim now. I'm sure this has been posted, but I found this hilarious:

Quote:
IGN: Finally, a few silly questions. Is there a unicorn in Skyrim?

Todd Howard: That's DLC. For a hundred dollars.

IGN: Can you ride dragons in Skyrim?

Todd Howard: Not in the way you're asking.

Can you levitate in Skyrim?

Todd Howard: Another DLC. Three hundred dollars.

It'll posible be a massive speed boost, Call Of Pripyat runs so much faster in DX11 because of compute shaders.

I've already explained this in other threads, but I guess I'll do it again...

PCs are not fixed hardware. Getting the most from a "PC" means testing hundreds of configurations, different CPUs (cache sizes, core amounts), different RAM speeds and amounts, different I/O devices (HDD vs SSD, HDDs that are slow 5400rpm vs. a raptor drive in RAID0), different GPUs (DX9 vs DX11, different VRAM amounts), different drivers, different OSes.

I can't stress how much time it takes to make a game that scales across so many different sets of hardware. Why do you think developers have shifted to consoles? It is something they would have done long ago, but the hardware just wasn't there. However, with this gen, the hardware was comparable to PC hardware so they can now develop a game for all platforms at once without having to port.

This was not a rant, but a clarification for those who cannot comprehend that there exists a world outside of their own called REALITY.

Console gamers expect the developer to do their best to get as much out of the system as they can, Why shouldnt PC gamers do the same?

Considering how easy it is to max out a system with set hardware from half a decade back, this is not a hard task. Any game that cannot max out console performance, is most likely an Indy game. Console gamers are typically less forgiving than PC gamers, because they don't expect extra features or believe that developers will actually always follow their words. I am not saying that PC gamers should not WANT better graphics, but that is far and away different from EXPECTING something.

Console gamers arent always happy with everything. They complain just like everyone else does about things they dont like.

Compared to the pathetic bleating of some PC "gamers" console grumblings are NOTHING.

FPS multiplayer games have traditionally sold well on PC's due to superior input controllers and dedicated servers. Word to mouth doesn't mean much for games anymore. Review sites are bought out and all of these pathetic "gamers" who complain, petition, and threaten to boycott still end up buying the games. Hell look at all the idiots boycotting L4D2 and MW2 who still ended up buying those games. Hell, once MW3 is released as another rehashed COD4, these sheep will STILL buy the stupid game. Besides, you are assuming that a decrease in PC game sales will actually hit developers hard. MW2 sales may have not been as good on PC, but it sold like hotcakes on consoles.

Graphics and physics are sacrificed, not gameplay. You do not need bleeding edge graphics or physics effects to make an intuitive gameplay system or an immersive storyline. As far as Crytek goes, their situation is a bit unique. Crysis 1 was a PC exclusive title with mediocre gameplay and storyline, built on the sole premise of beyond cutting edge graphics. Crysis 2 was hyped up the same way by Crytek, but has obviously not lived up close to the hype being a multi platform game. This puts Crytek in an awkward position. Due to the nature of the first game, its main fan base are those same people who value graphics over gameplay and actual substance. It does not have a rabid fan base for the actual play contents of the game like COD4, Bioshock, or L4D series. Now Crytek has release a game that is essentially a step backwards and the actual game is not good enough to lure in people who play games with substance.

Yes, To the latest patch. And head over to the bethsoft forums. I'm not the only one who knows Oblivion is a stable game. If it is unstable, it may be due to overclocking. Oblivion is VERY picking about overclocking.
