mini itx i3 randomly shutting down

Thread Starter
So I've done some searching, but don't seem to be able to find an answer.

I built a computer for my grandparents for xmas; it's an i3 on a gigabyte H55N mini-itx board in a CM elite100 slim case. It is using integrated graphics.

The problem: It has begun randomly shutting down, and won't turn on again for several minutes. Background will display nothing but solid colors, and the windows are no longer translucent. Aero-snap or whatever it is called works still. Oh and part of the problem is that I am in Colorado, they are in California.

What I've Tried: I've turned off all the power saving options. I have tried booting into safe mode, I've tried a full system restore to before when the problem begun. I've watched realtemp, and temperatures don't stray above 45. My grandparents say it isn't making any unusual noises, and it doesn't smell funny.

I'm worried the i3 is toast. Any ideas?

I don't think this is a hardware issue. I think a clean install of windows is in order.

That was going to be my next step before having them ship it back to me and start testing hardware. I'm skeptical of any hardware issues. Usually they pop up pretty quickly, and the fact it has taken 4 months seems a bit odd.

yup, walk them through the steps to reinstall a clean os and then all the drivers. I have a good feeling this will solve all the problems they are having.

I have the exact same board and I'll tell you right now it's probably a hardware failure. I have the same issue and although I submitted an rma, I have yet to get a response so I'm making some phone calls today.

Thanks Guys! I'm going to try and walk my grandparents through it over the phone. If a fresh install doesn't fix it, then I will have to look into hardware failure.

You run HD-tune for giggles? Doesn't really should like it but hey its free and easy.
How do you administrate it? LogMeIn or something similar?

I reckon VRM failure maybe.....or partial VRM failure? or something along the lines of the mobo frying itself partially.....
CPU's are quite hard to kill.....

I haven't run HD-tune. I thought if a fresh install didn't work, then I would start looking at a hardware failure. I use LogMeIn to access their computer. Unfortunately I don't think there is any way for me to remotely reinstall the OS for them. Any ideas?

Yeah, I think it would quite likely be the mobo or memory. I can't see how the psu would fail this way, but maybe I'm wrong.
