I want to run 1600 ram on a board that only supports 1333

Hey guys this will be my first thread at ocn (yea me!), anyways I want to run a set of corsair dominator 1600 ram with 8-8-8-24 timings on a new asus am3 880g chipset board that claims to only support 1333. My old msi board before it failed was rated to run 1600 when oc'ed, I never tried it but it was rated to run it.

I've looked at other posts and the general consensus it that since the ram controller is integrated into the cpu it should be able to run 1600 ram at it's rated speeds if I oc. Right now I am running a very basic set of 2x2gb 1333 g-skill ram with 9-9-9-24 timings and my rig seems to lag slightly even though my oc is fairly high so I want to move to a set of 2x2gb corsair dominator 1600 ram at 8-8-8-24 timings,

If they work it should be a nice set up and in addition hopefully I can carry it over to my upcoming BD build when I start it toward the end of the year. So my question is will it work? I don't care if I have to play with the bios to get the ram running at it's rated speed, that's half the fun, I just want to be sure it works. If anyone needs any more info about my rig it's the rig in my signature, thanks for the help in advance.

If this is exactly the same board you have : http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=dCFJVtaiZVk1PJCL

then you shouldn't have any problem using that 1600mhz ramkit from corsair, of course you'd have to go into BIOS and set the ram to its rated speed but it should work as it is said in the specs on ASUS site : 2000(O.C.)/1600(O.C.)/1333/1066 MHz.

If I'm mistaken, please feel free to correct me if it's different on AMD platforms.

RAM support is more of an issue of what a CPU can handle if you are looking at a halfway decent board.
The board you are looking at is an 8xx series chipset and im assuming you are getting either an Athlon II or a Phenom II for it, both of which have an IMC that supports 1600 IIRC.
Ive seen problems with non-rated memory in 7xx chipsets, but only once or twice with 8xx chipsets.

Good to know, and just to make sure I understand this your saying it has native 1600 support correct?

the amd cpu imc defaults to 1333, but it can hit 1600 and higher without any issues
in bios, just up the ram multi in bios from 6.6x to 8x
while you in there adjust the voltage to 1.6-1.7 or to what the ram reqs

Officially Phenom II, Athlon II and i7 memory speed is 1333. But it can handle higher speed. For AMD Phonem II and Athlon II x2, x3 and x4 can do 1866 max. Phenom II x6 can do 2000. IDK about the max that an i7 can do. The only thing I know is that it can handle 1600 with ease.

Official rating: 1333Mhz
Capable of: 1600Mhz via x8 multiplier (often undocumented)
Chip-specific, it may be capable of further (i.e. Phenom II x6 can do 2000Mhz and beyond)

Always ignore what the motherboard says about memory support. AMD has been using integrated memory controllers for over 9 years. Which means your question has been irrelevant for those 9 years.

^ What they said
I got official support and actual support mixed up.
