[GURU3D] MSI announces full compatibility with future AM3+ processors [Upadated 4/8] - Page 5

The only explanation I can think of is AMD releasing a special AM3 socket version FX. But that seems as likely as alligators in Alaska

Well all I can say is this is going to add fuel to the confusion fire. I will not believe it until I see a CPU-z screen shot or pics. Also, don't drag JF into this, as he said ask the mobo vendors the questions, not AMD because AMD has repeatedly said that they are not supporting BD on AM3, and prolly for good reason. DILIIGAFF.

I'm getting sick of people talking about the pin count, saying how AM3b has an extra pin hole.

AMD has never officially released a PIN count. Only the sockets are to blame for this speculation. It has 1 extra contact, big deal.

I've said it many times:
Socket AM3 = 941 Contacts
Socket AM3b = 942 Contacts

Actual CPU for AM3 = 938 pins.

AMD has NEVER released an official pin count.

Big businesses normally don't care about April fools like we do, especially foreign countries. Many many businesses go on as if it's just a normal day.

That's a very good point that I think almost everyone has overlooked. I know I sure did.

Twisted that around wrong... Thanks for nothing buddy

AM3 Currently out today in stores is 1 pin hole short of am3+

It is very easy to go to newegg and look for your self.

This being said, for bd to fit in the current 8xx line, it would have to be
-1 pin...
YES the CPU would have to be -1 pin!

Jf has confirmed that is not going to happen!

That is what I was saying, that and I feel bad for him having to repeat him self over and over again.

so go all you want! I hope it hurts!

This is the most Viable explanation thus far
+1
It is possible that the new black sockets out marketed as "AM3+" are just 1 hole extra as a precaution but not a necessity. IF SO this changes every thing and is VERY BIG NEWS!
Wish we could confirm it.

AS for businesses not caring about April fools, I agree. when I was 18 I shrink wrapped a buddies car and got wrote up for it by my boss who did'nt think it was funny.

My guess based on all the information we've seen thus far:

Some Bulldozer CPU's will support AM3 with reduced functionality as long as the BIOS supports it. These CPU's will not make use of the additional pin hole on the AM3+ socket which is why they will work. However, I think higher-end Bulldozer CPU's will require an AM3+ socket. I'm also betting the Bulldozer CPU's that support AM3 will slowly be phased out by newer revisions that are AM3+ only in the upcoming months after release.

That's my prediction and probably dead wrong but we'll see. However, if my predictions are true it would explain all the confusion. It would also make sense for AMD to make some BD CPU's AM3 compatible, even if it meant reduced functionality. Doing so would let consumers with AM3 boards try out the new Bulldozer CPU's and perhaps get them to upgrade to AM3+ down the road to take full advantage of their new Bulldozer CPU.
