Which SSD brands should I NOT buy?

Are the brands Corsair, Crucial, OCZ, Mushkin, and G.Skill all good brands for SSD's? Some better than others?

I see most of them have "up to" 285mb/s read speeds and 275mb/s write speeds where as the crucial I've been looking at has around 355mb/s read and 140mb/s write speed.

Any other specifications I should be looking at to determine speed or quality?

There really aren't any brands to avoid, but sequential speeds aren't where SSD's make a difference. It's in Read/Write IOPS. Try to look for some SSD's with at least 50,000 IOPS Read.

Opinion only

Intel

OCZ

Crucial

Look for Random Read/Write the IOPS, that is where you will be actually noticing the real world performance.

OCZ is on top right now for speed. I roll Intel for the personal preference and my belief that they are more reliable than OCZ.

The ones with 285mbs read, and 275mbps are sandforce driven drives. generally the most reccomended. Every brand is the same with the sandforce, Just pick whichever one you think looks the coolest/has the best warranty.

The crucial ones run off of the Marvell controller, also very good.

I wouldn't say there's a particular brand you shouldn't buy.

If you're really a knowledgeable enthusiast you should know by now it's not the appearance that counts.

You may want to do some research on which supplier of NAND chips are used, chip process (nm), the brand of controller used (indilinx, marvel, sandforce, etc).

Corsair, Crucial, and G skill are the best. Stay far away from OCZ. I run a business with systems up 20 hrs a day, everything from OCZ has crapped out.

Some of them list the spec as "Random Write 4K: 15,000 IOPS / 50,000 IOPS (Aligned)"

So is the IOPS 15,000? or 50,000?

50K.

You should always align your SSD.
