New case for i7 build

Thread Starter
I'm building a computer for a friend of mine, (he's a strange one, picked out the parts yet can't put them together???), but is held up on what case to go with. The mobo will be a Rampage III Extreme with an i7-990x, and three GTX 580's.

I realize these can build up a bit of heat, I've told him he might be better off with a WC setup but he's determined that he just needs a case with enough air flow. I've done a bit of searching and looked at some reviews, but i've found cases are usually best chosen by experience.

I don't really need any recommendations as to what he should or shouldn't get with this computer, so please refrain. I'd just like to ask what case(s) you would recommend for this build.

Much thanks!

If he insists on not water cooling, get the HAF 932 (NOT the HAF X). Get 4 120 mm fans to replace the 230mm side panel on the 932. Those will be your best bet for keeping the 580s relatively cool under load.

Air cooling is not an option, Water cooling is the only way to go with 3x GTX 580 being quiet and cool......

and are the gtx 580 reference cards? if they are, then perhaps a FT02, RV02, RV01, TJ11?

The HAF series is also great for air too.

He's pretty stuck on the 580's, but I honestly don't know when exactly he'll save up the money to buy them so I'm sure something else will grab his interest by the time he has enough.

If you really think temps will be a problem i'll keep trying to convince him to go with WC, or maybe change his mind. I don't really want to worry about taking care of his pc after i build it. I'm doubtful he's capable of draining and refilling a liquid cooled setup without some major issues and i'd be getting a call.

And are you sure about temps getting too high? Guru3d has a review on 3-way 580's inside a Corsair 800D and they have max temps 87 degrees Celsius (air cooled). The 800D is generally a case for liquid cooling and certainly doesn't have the best air-flow. 87 degrees is pretty hot but definitely not a dangerous area for those cards. Are you sure that a much better ventilated case would be that big of a problem for him? Temps would be much lower.

If he is 100% on air, than tell him to get a haf 932 or haf x. a lian li a70f / a71f is a great in between case.

Wow.... 4 120mm fans are going to be pretty loud, me thinks. Better get some earplugs along with them.

I think that would depend on the fans. I have an Antec 1200 and it's more than bearable. Of course, i have the speeds for all of the fans turned down to a minimum. I suppose i'll have to let him hear my computer and decide
