Why is this happening?

Unfortunately, I have to use windows XP at work. And every time I try to "right click, save as" a picture off the internet, it saves it as some bizarre file type. Something called "Graphics interchange format image". I have never heard of this, and seeing as how its not a common file type, I can't upload pics that I save to forums that I want to post them to. I went around it by just using photobucket but I'm still curious as to what the problem is. Saving the file as a jpeg or a gif doesn't work either.

Actually, .gif is probably the most common image format on the web. So it probably wasn't every time you saved a picture, it's just seemed like that since they are so common. There shouldn't be an issue reusing one of the .gif's, no need to convert it.

Only problem is when I try to upload to forums using the conventional method, it says "invalid file type" like its not on the long list of accepted file types that you can upload as a pic. Odd.

This is a .gif:

Are you trying to upload the image as an attachment, not just link to it? If so, I guess those forums just don't allow that format for some reason.

And a funny one too. But why won't any forum let me upload one? Guess that's what I'm really asking here. It acts like its not a supported file type.
