Just left the AMD

Thread Starter
Just left the AMD camp and though i would share my experience incase others are thinking the same.
I had my 965 C3 for well over a year, and although it was a great chip, overclocking to 3.8Ghz, i knew it was the weakest link in my setup. So after lots of thought i took the plunge and swapped to Sandy Bridge.
WOW, amazing, for anyone who is contemplating making the move, you will not regret! I have overclocked to 4.5Ghz but just changing the multipliers and voltage, easy. Holding out until i get a new bracket for my Fenrir to push it further as load temps are close to 80c.

So for the benchmarks! And yes i know they dont show real world performance or whatever but they give you a pretty good idea.

PC Mark
AMD 965 C3 3.8 Ghz 12793
Intel 2500K 3.3 Ghz 15585
Intel 2500K 3.8 Ghz 16633
Intel 2500K 4.5 Ghz 18288 !!

3dMark 06
AMD 965 C3 3.8 Ghz 20983
Intel 2500K 3.3 Ghz 23971
Intel 2500K 3.8 Ghz 26277
Intel 2500K 4.5 Ghz 30281 !!

Time to Super Pi 4M
AMD 965 C3 3.8 Ghz 1m41s
Intel 2500K 3.3 Ghz 57s
Intel 2500K 3.8 Ghz 52s
Intel 2500K 4.5 Ghz 45s !!

So there you have it, but the biggest test was, would it run FSX on max settings, something i have wished for a long time. YES, flying round NYC on max FPS doesnt dip below 20fps.
AMD are great, but for games and all out performace get a Sandy Bridge!

Doubt it's worth it for those who are already on the AMD platform, they'd be better off at least waiting for Bulldozer to see what it brings but nice share of experience

20 FPS isn't very playable either on FSX while doing a landing :/

I went from the Opteron to the Thuban, from a 8800GT to a HD5870, and I saw zero improvement while landing on LEBL (El Prat, Spain) with Barcelona modded to death. 3 FPS, it was impossible not to crash the monstrous An226.

Anyways, nice improvement you got on the synth benches!

Can't wait to see how Bulldozer does against Sandies.

I personally find the 20fps fine on FSX, but different for different folks
Same setting under the AMD 965C3 wouldnt break 10fps. Although i always heard that FSX was always better on Intels.

Let's say that Intel dropped hard piles of $$ into Microsoft's postbox a while ago.

Not strange, at all.

A Q6600 easily outperforms my chip in FSX, and any nVIDIA card will rape my HD5870, then come back, and rape it again in terms of FPS in FSX.

8800GT 512MB=Radeon HD5870 1GB.

20FPS is playable in flight, but not in landings. And I love doing hard landings with massive crosswinds during rainy nights

You're comparing a $160 last-gen CPU to a $225 current-gen CPU... what were you expecting?
I am hanging out to outgrade from my E8400 but I saw the issues in the initial Sandybrdige release and thought I will wait for the bulldozer release.

So do you want a cookie or something? Synthetic benchmarks and an Intel optimized game really don't say much.

This is why I have multiple systems from both camps...I get the best of both worlds. I love my AMD setups because I can look at them and know that I didn't spend an arm and leg on them, and I'm getting pretty good performance. My Intel systems are fun and bring another level of "fun" to my hobby.

Have fun and I'm sure you haven't left the AMD camp for good, they always come back at some point
