HD 6970 cooling suggestion

Thread Starter
Just bought this baby.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150517

Some reviews I've read is that this thing sounds like a jet engine. Especially when gaming. I looked up Accelero Xtreme Plus.

http://www.arctic.ac/en/p/cooling/vg...us.html?c=2182

According to that it's compatible on the description, but doesn't show the 6970 on the actual compatible page. Anyone know if it is? Anyone have a better suggestion? If I did get this is there anything else I would need? How hard is it to install?

Thanks and sorry for all the questions.

have you received your 6970 yet? if not, dont order the cooler yet. i had a 5870 for a couple of days and the fan is much louder on the 5870 then on my 6950 which i'm assuming has the same cooler as the 6970. 5870 sounds like a loud whooo, 6970 sounds like a loud hissing sound, the cooler on the 6970 is actually kinda quiet, it doesnt bother me at all.

Try out the stock cooler, you might not find it to be too bad. I'm not too bothered by it but that might change come summer time.

Yes that cooler will fit with the vr-001 kit for the vrms. The hole spacing around the gpu is the same as the 4870, 5870, etc so any gpu cooler that fits those will work. You just need to worry about vrms and memory.

Haven't actually received it yet. Should have it by Wednesday. Had an Eyefinity setup for about 3 days, but my 5870 I think is bad and I'd rather just have the game on one monitor... paying attention to multiple monitors is just a bit too hard when it comes to FPS's and all.

Thanks for the heads up guys. Appreciate it.

Also, a friend was telling me on his Nvidia there's a spot to control fan speed and he always turns it up for gaming. Is there a setting like that for ATI with Cataylst? If so do you think it would be beneficial to turn up the fan speed to 100% for each game?

I use MSI afterburner with my cards both for my ATI and nvidia cards. I suggest using the profile settings in MSI afterburner. I have my fans at auto during 2d and only increases at 3d mode

I have the AXP on my 6970s and it works very well. The fan noise is quiet even at 100%, but spins only at 2000 RPM.

Overall cooling is excellent though.

I would recommend the Shaman from Thermalright. I have it on my 6950 and it is totally silent and keeps the card very cool. It takes up a lot of space in your case but I had room to spare in my case as I do not run crossfire.

AMD screwed up stock series 6900. This is so poorly done cooling. And I must change my ATI6970 fgor GTX580 and pay extra money. After 10 years with ATI high end cards.
I do not care for OC and aftermarket coolers.
I have EAH6970 and temps is 90-100C. Horror, Noise fan. Crazy noise.

I think you have a card with Horrible tim slathered on tbh, my brother has the same card and at like 70% fan speed he gets 65c in furmark. and at 50, 73(but he always runs it at 70 cuz he cant sleep w/o noise)

Ya ASUS 6970 really sucks at keeping itself cool. Mines run at 90+ too.
