First timer's quest to 5.0GHz! Please help!

Thread Starter
So, I'm currently sitting at my signature specs, 4.8GHz @ 1.40Vcore in BIOS, reports as low as 1.376Vcore in CPU-Z while under extreme load, i.e. stability testing. Temps are idle at 29c and during a one hour Prime95 run I get up to 73c.

The chip refuses to go above 4.8GHz at anything lower than 1.47Vcore, at which I actually did manage a 5.0GHz Prime95 run but had to shut it down once I saw the temps approaching 85c. I have two questions:

1) What suggestions do you guys have to get a more power/heat efficient OC, even at 4.8GHz? It's pretty much rock stable but I'd like to get the Vcore lower than 1.40. I've only ever edited the Vcore and manual multiplier in my BIOS, I havn't ventured to touch any of the other voltages or settings aside from setting PLL Overvoltage to "enabled".

2) Can someone please, for the love of God, explain to me why the internet is littered with warnings not to take a SB CPU past even 1.38 on the Vcore when over half the guys running at 5.0GHz have their voltages set to well over 1.45 or so? Do these guys just not care or are they avoiding the damage by other means? I am OC'ing on apparently the best CPU air cooler there is (Noctua NH-D14) and my temps at my current settings seems really good. Is it the heat generated by the higher voltages rather than the voltages themselves that cause these failures? In other words, is 1.47Vcore fine as long as it's got a low enough temp? If so, what would an ideal temp be for an air cooled 5.0GHz 2600K?

Or, should I just leave well enough alone, keep my stable 4.8GHz @ 1.40 setup with the reasonable temps and accept the fact that not all 2600Ks can reach 5.0GHz? Furthermore, is this then dangerous given all the warnings not to exceed 1.38v (some even warn as high as 1.35 is risking it...)

HELP!

And thanks so much! I'd be a goner without you guys haha.

Go for water, I am just starting my setup.

I am sure u can go higher voltages just will have temp issues. ^^ solution?

I'm really not into the idea of water cooling. I'm thinking now of actually knocking my setup back to 4.6GHz @ 1.31v because I've now been running Prime95 a while (as I type this) and it's doing great so far...

Not sure who's saying not to bring SB above 1.36v... that's pretty ridiculous! I would consider anything after 1.49v (around there) to be unsafe for 24/7 use. As for heat, I got close to 5.0ghz. I was stable at 4.8ghz but I just couldn't keep my temps nice, so I had to drop it down to 4.5 and that's where I'll be spending my time until I go water cooling.

I mean, the only thing holding you back from reaching 5.0ghz is temperatures. 5.0ghz with anything but a real water cooling setup is brutal, and in most cases really not realistic to achieve. Some people can get it because they have a huge case with excellent airflow because they have a bunch of 120mm fans and what not.

I mean you said you're 73c at 4.8ghz, I really wouldn't ever let my SB chip hit 75c in a stability test. So I'd say your chance of hitting 5.0ghz are very slim.

75 is very low bro, i would say 80 - 85.

Looking at your vcore and current temp ill say you will have little chance to get it stable at a reasonable temp.

Probably need 1.5v+ with your current chip, ive seen recent a costa rica chip that runs 5.0ghz stable with only 1.45 vcore

http://i458.photobucket.com/albums/q...00K/50145v.jpg

All in all if you can run at 5 ghz with a voltage like that great but anything higher than 1.5v its probably not worth it, its not any faster in the real world only adds to the internet e-peen factor....

You will need more than 1.47v. Your chip behaves just like mine

45x @ 1.325v
47x @ 1.416v
48x @ 1.432-1.444v

I booted into windows at 5ghz for screen shot. It was @ 1.49v I'm positive that wouldn't usable without more vcore.

For my chip booting is no issue at all, i can boot 5.0ghz with like 1.42, but getting it stable even at 4.8ghz need tons of vcore, but im not sure anymore is just vcore issue, its some mix of settings which cause instability, im sure....its just impossible to fail 4.8ghz wih 1.48 vcore, with every settings possible tweaked as it should! extreme phases, 140% current, 350 vcore fixed ferq, c states enabled, spread spectrum on, speedstep on, LLC ultra high, VCCIO 1.81, Dram 1.55 (for stability) and even Ram @1866 it wont pass more then like 1 hour prime 95

Im almost ready to sell my chip and get new one, im just scared if the issue was not only the cpu, but, on the other hand, the same BSOD always 101! speak for cpu issues...(vcore)
