Need for Speed Shift 2: A Review

so. the latest installment of NFS.

NFS is a franchise that over the years, has garnered a lot of criticism from many people. After most wanted, the series was tarnished by many less than stellar releases, such as prostreet and undercover. then came the first need for speed: Shift. the game introduced some revolutionary elements such as the Helmet Cam. It was tarnished however, by a poor driving mechanic.

Cue Need for Speed: Shift 2. this is my personal video, testing out the driving mechanics with a 911 GT3 RS.

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-nF6Wl7zLk[/ame]

As you can see in that video, the improved helmet cam iis there, with the driver's head reacting to every move i make and the helmet from inside is actually modeled. that is a very nice touch. In that video, you also see that the cars no longer handle like they are on ice, and they have grip. the 911 GT3 RS is a car that is known for its gripping ability, so it seems like it is on rails. I've driven the Aston Martin V8 Vantage, and i can say that the aston is a lot more of a lairy beast, not quite as nimble through the corners and is quite tail happy.

The sounds are a eargasm. driving the GT3 RS, i wanted to keep driving and listen to that hairy chested flat 6 bellow at me.

Gameplay? ah, gameplay is greatly improved. ive done drift races (will cover later), night races, day races..and they were all in an audi S4 hatchback (except for drift) ...and i was having fun. i was excited. This is because NFS Shift 2 Unleashed captures the sense of speed and the sense of nervousness you would have as you take a corner at high speed. the helmet cam in this game models everything, from the drivers head being slammed back from a sudden burst of acceleration, to his head being lurched forward by a sudden stop. You will notice even the slighest bump, whether it be modeled by a part on the car rattling, or the driver's head moving.

small note about night races: oh my goodness. it is just like you are racing in the pitch black with just your headlights. it is absolutely amazing how they have captured the feel of a night race.

DRIFT: drift is amazing. Move over, GRiD. in this, especially with a vibration feedback controller, drift is awesome. it is extremely challenging, and if you are not careful about it, the car will run away from you. when you are engaged in drift in this game, it is addicting. i personally feel that NFS Shift 2 has modeled how an actual car drifts, if you do opposite lock, the car goes out of drift. steering in the same direction of the drift makes the back end slide out even more, for an even more badass smoke show.

conclusion: need for speed shift 2: unleashed fixes all of the bad things in shift 1, and keeps all of the good things shift 1 had. The car library may not be quite as expansive as other games, but it features many cars to keep you entertained, and the tuning and modifying of performance areas and visual areas is sure to keep you tuned in to shift 2 for a long time to come.

I have been playing it for couple of days now, but for me, the jury is still out on this one... I think the physics of driving has definitely improved over first Shift, but more and more, I feel as if it's more for fun rather than simulation like Forza or GT series... Maybe I just suck at the game, but I just can't get used to the driving dynamics of this game, while I consider myself pretty good at other driving games. Just my HO...

NFS is something I always like to play, but to be just ontrack racing gets old really fast
NFSU was fun while it lasted as it had characters and a theme...Without character its just another game with no personality which unfortunately we see SO MUCH of in the last few years...

Drifting is amazing? I beg to differ ...

If I take the absolute same car with no modifications at all, (Nissan 240SX) I can barely get a little bit of wheel spin in 3rd while in a race, whereas in a drifting session, I can do donuts in 5th ... Suddenly the car skids as if I was drifting on rims alone. The car is completely uncontrollable (MOMO wheel, all assists off, manual transmission) while drifting. I can barely get a decent drift before it spins out at the slightest touch of the gas pedal.

Don't get me wrong, I can play racing games and I'm all about perfection in the corners and drifting (I can drift all day in LFS with awesome combos) but this game is ridiculous when it comes to drifting.
GRiD was so much better.

edit: Racing wise, its quite a bit of improvement over the first Shift. Its actually enjoyable to play. No more car hopping around. biggrin.gif

One thing's for sure. Its absolutely NOT a sim racing game as they advertised it as long as the car moves on a central axis and not on the actual 4 wheels it has. (see LFS)

Wow, good review, just makes me want to actually buy this game. But is drift actualy fixed? coz shift 1 it was unplayable

Good game, but for me it feels really hard. AI on medium, handling experienced and so on. Maybe I should change it to easy or something. Stuck on 2nd drift race, spins over all the time and yes I'm playing on keyboard. And when I'm trying those Modern B time attack races, other racers just facerolls me. They got better cars and so on. Meh..

upgrade your car. i was getting owned by an RX-8 in my s4 and then i did an engine swap and a few suspension updates and then i was owning the field. cheap way instead of buying a car--and i just wouldnt play this game on a keyboard much less drift. get a 360 controller for windows or a reciever for windows if you already have a 360 controller.

and to the guy saying drift sucks. well duh, of course you arent going to get a drift out of a STOCK car..thats why all drift cars are modified..

and grid's drift had too much grip, even with the FD3S. dont get me wrong, i loved grid's drift biggrin.gif but to me, shift 2's drift is a lot better. it requires skill to pull off a nice drift..i will however say that the cars can be a tad hard to control, but i like the challenge.
