I'm leaning towards the 6970's as they are 400 bucks cheaper for a pair than 580's...enough to buy waterblocks for them.

Help?
A watered down 6990 is the best bet. They are awesome cards, and on water should yeild a 1000 core OC easily.

Then when you are bored, you can get a 6970 or another 6990 down the road.

Lol, this is hectic... Really. Are you really buying this to be able to "max out your games" or just to have it... You play everything maxed already and you do get awesome frames. Even I can tell you that. Why not just wait it out, save up, and get the best of the new generation cards? But, that's just my opinion.

Lol yea im a freak! I've already resisted getting sandy bridge for the mean time , will def wait for Ivy. I can;t control this urge for new hardware!! AND, I just sold the 5970 for $600 NZ with EK block, thats about $500 usd or so. Happy as Larry!

I can max out my games, but I always want more for some silly reason...

I still have the 5870 to tie me over, once I get a new card I'll flick this cheap to some lucky bugger. Oh the world we live in...

Hahaha oh well I'm not judging you. Just got into PC's again myself and I know what you are talking about.. Besides, I guess when you get to the next generation cards, some random guy, like me, would also just tune you "no, wait for the next generation, because that would be really worth it". And so it will go on and on. But good luck with your decision, doing a big upgrade myself. Haha

Since you are already in Tri-Fire 5970+5870, why not simply step-up to Tri-Fire 6990+6970?

That's exactly what I did, and the 6xxx serie Tri-Fire set-up is much better and faster. With the new AUSUM BIOS on the 6990, it takes 2 seconds to match the 6990 and 6970 speeds in Tri-Fire.

And for the price of 580 SLI, you will have 3 GPUs for the price of 2, and destroy any 580 SLI set-up. Look at those slides. Poor 1000$ 580 SLI set-up takes an epic beating here against 6990+6970 at 2560X1600 4XAA/8XAA. And for the same price.

Crysis. 59 fps against 32. Almost double the fps! Same price. Can't beleive people are still buying 580 SLI... same price, and half the fps. Nvidia really need to lower the price on those overpriced 500$ POS... ''Buy 580 SLI, it's THA BEST''... (lol..)

''Yes... but... but... there is only 1.5Gb of VRAM on those 580 that's why they loose so badly!'. So then, they are really overpriced if they are so memory limited.

Stalker. 79 fps against 46. Almost double the fps again. Same price.

Well I'm comtemplating going the tri-fire route again, it all comes down to cost vs performance, here in NZ a 6990 is $1200 NZD, a 6970 is $570. SLI 580's is $1500. That's nearly $1800 for a trifire setup here.

Dont forget I need waterblocks too factor in a further $400 so essentially a watercooled trifire setup will cost me about $2200.

Whereas watercooled 580's will be about $1900 with blocks.

I will only stick with EK too, when can we expect them to be released??? I'll need to import one from Slovenia by the looks of it.

I am also concerned now that my poor i5 570 and p55 will be a bottle neck for that 6990/6970 setup. But it handled my 5970/5870 no problems. No perceivable bottleneck IMO.

I still got my 5870 to tie me over...

The other alternative is to go for 3 x 6970's with blocks that comes to $2240, about the same as 6990/6970.

I need more advice as to what to get, I just want over the top performance that gives me the best fps. - I admit I'm a FPS whore
