The problem is that it's a board based mostly around Overclocking PC hardware, and it seems like you are looking for something more.

It's.... a forum. I'm not sure what you're expecting out of it.
Yeah the photography forum is all good. There aren't any idiots here. Just that some days when I log on, there hasn't been any new stuff posted D:

I suppose a forum is meant to be a public email thing, but because I live in a completely different time-zone, replies seem a bit... delayed to me.

And decent people leaving the forum instead of hanging around and setting a good example doesn't help.
Admittedly, sometimes I can be over-optimistic

I'll probably stay in this subsection, the people are nice here. People are much better here, but the photo community is admittedly a bit small. I can count the number of active posters with my two hands

EDIT: POTN seems a nice place, will I get butchered for using Nikon? Also, the thing I don't like about dpreview is that it seems very gear orientated. There is only one forum for posting up shots, and that isn't split into different types of shots.

Nope. It's a Canon-oriented forum, but there's a fair number of Nikon users on there. You probably won't get much "How do I fix my Nikon camera" support since most users on there don't own Nikons, but you won't be flamed (aside from being called "The Dark Side" )

From what I could gather reading posts on POTN, apparently there aren't many good, free, populated Nikon forums, so a fair number of POTN users are Nikon users or former Canon users who've switched.

I definitely have to agree with that. I'm not a fan of the dpreview forums by any means. Their reviews are nice, but I try to stay away from their forums. They tend to put gear above anything else on those forums in my experience, and there's quite a bit of Canon/Nikon/Sony/m43 fanboyism running around there. The way I look at it is the dpreview forums remind me of POTN's computer forums, only the mindset is now applied to all of camera gear with photography taking a back seat.

Odd that there is not a hands-down winner. . .

I know that there seems to be a rather small group of frequent participants in these photo forums--but I have not pursued other forums because of the personality of these.

Temperament, pacing, and content on this photog forum is about right for me--why look elsewhere?

It's a great place, but like I said, living on the other side of the world means things appear to go slower for me.

I can easily see what you're saying. Strangely enough, despite being a Nikon shooter, you should try POTN. There are son many users (250k) there and many from different parts of the world, so it never seems to slow down there.

Plus there's often lots of general photography talk there and I do see Nikon users.

If your using Nikon then I really suggest looking at Nikoncafe.com

If I am not on OCN I am there. Yes I have come across one or two people I never hope to hear from again but in general they are very friendly, quick to reply, constructive and very active.

If you end up there look me up.

There is a mix of sections for posting different kinds of work for either C&C or just fun as well as technical and general discussions about gear and anything else.

As with all other photo forums I stay away from the computing section. Its mostly MAC orientated anyway which I know nothing about.
