That's not true at all.

5970 + 5870 Tri-Fire does scale VERY GOOD and it is a damn beast setup.

That setup is a beast, but then again 5970 + x2 5870 would be useless, but trust me, I've seen 5970 + 5870 in my hands, the scale was just awesome

Reading back the OP's question, if I had to choose between a GTX580 and an HD5970, I'd definitely choose a GTX580 due to the following reasons:

1. Single card solution, you are assured you won't have microstutering and your games will run smooth as butter for sure. Also you won't have any SLI/CFX issues with drivers, so you won't have to worry about that.

2. Newer technology, better temps, better Warranty (I'm guessing the 5970 would be used?)..

3. Huge OC capability (Although the 5970 does OC great too, but 580 is just a beast overall)

4. Great tesselation in DX11 compared to the 5000 series of ATI.

So my opinion between GTX580 and HD5970 would definitely be a GTX580
