SC2 resolution question

Thread Starter
I have been gaming @ 1680x1050 and am considering upgrading to either a 24" 1080 monitor or a 25" 1950x1200.

Is it worth the upgrade? Or should I just stick with my current 22".
It's so little!

I don't think it would be worth it, unless you're getting a a crazy good deal on the monitor.

For SC2 only?

Well. It's a slight upgrade to go to 1920x1080 and it's a minor upgrade to go to 1920x1200.

Resolutions increase like this in small steps. While 1920x1080 will not be too noticiably different from 1680x1050, 1920x1200 would be visibly slightly better than 1680x1050. However, the difference between 1920x1080 and 1920x1200 in games is very minimal, almost not noticiable. So here we are again. What to choose? I wouldn't upgrade just for games, but I would advise a 1920x1200 monitor just for the browsing space as well.

Also, when you get a 1920x1200 monitor, you can run dual screens, which is a godsent while browsing.

Bewarned though, the resolution is not all that matters. Evem Some 1680x1050 displays look a lot better than some 1920x1200 displays. It's just the panel quality. If you want suggestions for good looking displays, give us a budget and we can recommend some to you.

you may not notice it gameplay wise, but once you game on a 24in monitor you wont want to go back to anything smaller.

I think you mean 1920x1200.

I just upgraded from a 22" 1680x1050 to a 24" 1920x1200. I remember the incredible upgrade 1280x1024->1680x1050 was, but the upgrade to 1920x1200 just wasn't quite as large a change. I was able to get a pretty nice monitor for $150, so it was worth it, but if I had paid the going rate of ~$400, I wouldn't have felt that the upgrade was worth it. A 6850 also might have issues at 1920x1200, you are likely going to have to turn down some settings from what you used to use. In terms of SC2, I am not really sure I have noticed a real difference, surprisingly.

In short, upgrading to 1920x1200 is a pretty small upgrade, upgrading to 1920x1080 is an even smaller upgrade. If you've got patience, I would suggest waiting a year or two for 2560x1600 or 2560x1440 resolutions to become more mainstream and the price to come down, that would feel like a proper change for the better.

I actually purchased my 22" because of the great picture and high contrast (unfortunately before I was fully versed in resolution). My budget is around $200 +or- $20.

The 6850 is new to me - upgrading from a GTS250 512mb. I was able to run good fps with mostly high to ultra settings (with a few med. on things I don't need ). I figure the new gpu should get me pretty much ultra on everything, but don't know yet as I have not installed it yet. The monitor upgrade is just a want based on playing on my room mates 24" 1920x1200 setup. It feels like I can see more on the screen.

1: I doubt you're versed well in resolutions ATM either. 99% of OCN has got resolutions wrong. Anyhow. That doesn't matter here.

2: His screen can see the exact same amount as yours in games, but it takes more pixels to form one image, and therefore the image will have more clarity with a 1920x1200 setup. However, it should be noted that a high quality 1680x1050 can easily beat a medium to low quality 1920x1200 in games. But I don't think IPS 1680x1050 monitors are manufactured anymore...

Just go with the a 1920x1200 if you feel like the difference you saw at your mates place was worth it. But you should note that you might get a lower quality panel than the one he has. Just a chance. Shouldn't be disappointed if your new monitor won't hold up against your mates one.
