Alienware m17x OR XPS 17 OR Sager 8170?? - Page 4

I've compared prices of Alienware m17x R3 and Sager 17" laptops
Sager tends to be $250 cheaper with same specs as Alienware
so If you think the fancier design / lights is worth the extra $250 bux - go for alienware
If you want to save money and u don't care about the blings - go for sager

btw Sager has the strongest single laptop gpu which is the gtx 485m
and Alienware only has the 2gb 6970 as their highest option ( theres like 15% performance difference between them from the benchmarks I've seen )

and If you want to get the alienware over sager,
dont get the 120hz 3D version... it's not rly worth it
just go with the 1920 x 1080 60hz lcd panel

My conclusion is this:

Alienware were really overpriced in the past but they are quite reasonably priced nowadays ( only $200 ~ $300 more expensive then its competitors - and they look amazingly sexy so I guess it kinda justifies for the price ) - so if you have some money to spare and love the design I don't see why you shouldn't go for the m17x (and if you can get crazy family discounts I urge you to go for the alienware..) Recommended Model: m17x without the 3D

Sager provides the latest / fastest laptop technology (they are the only ones that provide the 485m gpus in their laptops and they are pretty dang fast..), their price are also quite cheap/reasonable compared to the Alienware, however, I guess the biggest downfall is that they are really really ugly
so if you want pure performance and save some money and don't care about the aesthetic appeal of your laptop - Sager is your way to go
(Recommended model: NP-8170 or NP-8170-S1)

ASUS makes great laptops too ( I believe they provide the cheapset gaming laptops compared to Sager and Alienware ) but, I dont think they offer any higher gpus than 460m so you are pretty limited there, their design is also love and hate kind of thing.. (I am personally OK with them but some ppl said they are butt ugly..), also I've heard some overheating problems, but overall they are good laptops as well - so if you want the cheapest solution and like their design, go for ASUSRecommended model: ASUS G73SW-A1

thanks a lot DJ.............the biggest reason for the alienware idea at all is the fact that i can build it how i like, and basically knock off $680.00 off the top right away from a family members discount.......plus i do like the all metal design and slot load dvd.......and i REALLY want a back lit keyboard which the Sager does not have.......do i need a rainbow of colors as a back lit? no......i think the rainbow effect is gay......and i say that cause my sister in law was here last night and saw it and was like oohhhh my girlfriend and i would love that laptop.....yes she is gay LOL and ill never use the rainbow colors, just 1 color at a time.......

so basically i get a nice discount on the alienware.........which is why i was thinking dell all along...........all that aside, ill go price a Sager now.....

EDIT.............

heres a Sager i just built...........

whats the cooling like on this thing? i mean should it be elevated in the rear like some laptops so it cools better? i have no plans to use whichever laptop i buy on my lap......that's whats the ipad2 is for, so it will always be on the desk or countertop.

i question Sager for these reasons.....

1. never heard of them till i started this thread....
2. whats their service like?
3. will this laptop last 3 or more years?
4. do i get a windows 7 disk? (for future re-installs)
5. is this a small company that will either go under in a few years or be bought out by someone therefore rendering my warranty useless?
6. with the warranty what exactly does it cover??

sorry for the ignorance guys, but i want to cover all my bases before i shell out 2000.00+ for anything......i really wish this Sager came with back lit keys but oh well.......if its better build quality with less issues im sold........

1.They dont sell retail brick and mortar laptops, only buy to order custom ones, hence why no one outside of laptop enthusiasts know them.
2.Depends on who you order it from. Xotic has good customer service.
3.If you take care of it then it will.
4.You'll get an image/restore disk not a retail windows 7 copy.
5.Xotic as well as several other resellers have been in business for years, some even have a brick and mortar store. Worst case scenario is the reseller goes bankrupt and you have to deal with sager support directly.
6. http://www.xoticpc.com/laptop/sagerwarranty.htm
Standard warranty.

As said, I would go Sager but with that 680 dollar discount and your want of backlit keyboard i think you would be happier with alienware probably.

Sager doesnt have backlit leys however the asus ones do and are a lot better in terms of price/performance. I would still go sager though because the new SB ones are even cheaper than the asus ones!

i am currently using a sager 8130 and love the thing. i wanted to get the 8170 but i was told by a rep on the phone at xoticpc they had more backorders for them and i could not wait any longer as i needed one for work. stupid SB recall....

i am very happy with my purchase, it plays all games on high to medium settings and was under 1200 bucks. go with sager, you wont regret it.

just because i like to be late and screw up decisions i actually bought the new xps 17, and its quite impressive, only real flaws to it is the screen is a bit flimsy compared to what I'm used too, and the fan is loud.

but beyond those 2 things i got the 2630qm and the 555m in it able to play all games at native res crysis 2 runs on med (think its high in menu) with 30 frames, all cod games run amazing (60 frames+ highest settings no aa) and dragon age runs very well as well. as for battery life i haven't tested it while playing games but for basic web browsing + music its 5 hours with the 9 cell which is standard with the quads.

only other thing i can think of mentioning for it is the speakers are absolutely amazing and 2 hd bays so i threw a ssd in it
for my configuration i payed $1100 for it 2630qm 6GB of ram, 500GB hd, backlit keyboard, bluetooth and a bunch of other nonsense.
