WHS backup too slow? "Determining which clusters have changed" - Page 2

I have a few more questions (sorry if they're noob ones):

1) after this "base" backup, whenever i click on "backup" now again, it'll just be in increments this time?

2) is it recommended to backup the WHS to say an external HDD?

3) if i don't plan on leaving this on 24/7 and only turn it on sat/sun for weekly backups, is that fine?

4) if you accidentally remove your user account, is the backup that is tied to the account removed?

thanks!

1)Yeses
2)If you want there is a plugin BDBB that will allow backup of the backups from the WHS to another drive or network location.
3)Yes
4)If you remove your computer from the computer list yes.

I also ask you this, if you didnt backup your system partition your drive wont boot after restore. You can probably run a restore but it seems like that a lot of additional work to say a small bit of hard space.

you're supposed to back up that 100mb system reserved thing?

crap.. i think i unchecked it... if i reconfigure it and check it back, the backup will redo itself from square one?

thanks.
When doing a restore, WHS will recognize the Realtek NIC on the client machine. However, the client machine will not be able to find the network. I tried different Realtek drivers as well. Blame Realtek.

If you have this issue, you may want to plug in a non-Realtek NIC temporarily.

You might want to test if you can do a restore. Better to know now then when you need to for real.

Boot off the Restore CD and ensure the client can see the server.

Well the reason for you slow speeds appears to be your 100 mbit router. It's not slow for that router, just slower than you want. To speed it up, you need to speed up the router or get a switch to put between your computers and the home server, i did.

My setup:

internet>>router>>port 1>>gigabit switch for computers and server
>>port4>>xbox360

I still only get 15mbit from comcast, but my transfers and backups to the home server are much more managable for speed due to all computers and the server being on the gigabit switch.

that does sound like a plan.. maybe something like this?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833156259

This is my setup

internet>>asus wl-520gu running tomato fw > port 1 pc>>port 2 mom's comp >> port 3 bro's comp.

so if i have that switch it would then be
internet>>asusl wl-520gu >> port 1 switch >> port 2 on switch for mom's pc >> port 3 on switch for server >> etc.

and what do you mean by speeding up the router? what are the possible ways of doing that?

--

also, yesterday i was playing around with the "jumbo frames" and i set both to 4KB MTU on both client and server

ill do another backup of my bro's win xp machine.. i have something important going on now on my desktop

if the client does not see the server after booting off from CD, then that means I have to look for some other driver and test it out

First, I would pick up an 8 port switch its not that much more and when all of a sudden you realize that your out of ports and have to plug into that 100Mbs router.

Second, if you have any 64bit OSes make sure you download 32bit vista drivers since the boot disk is built on Vista 32bit. Copy them to your software folder under a subfolder called network drivers for each machine copy these to a USB key, burn a recovery CD, you will download the newest version from microsoft. Then test with the 32bit drivers, it took me a couple hours to reload my on pc with Win7 Pro 64bit.
