Help matching i7 2600k w/ memory

Hi everyone,

New to the forum (obviously). I've built quite a few PCs over the last 10 years or so, and all have been AMD. However, I'm looking at getting a core i7 2600k for my new (hopefully future-proof, at least for a while) machine. The question I have is in regard to memory speed, which I haven't had issues with previously. This is what I'm looking at for my new build:

-Intel Core i7-2600K Sandy Bridge 3.4GHz
-GIGABYTE GA-P67A-UD5-B3 LGA 1155 Intel P67
-Tuniq CR-T120-EX-SV 120mm Magnetic Fluid Dynamic Bearing Tower Extreme CPU Cooler
-G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
-EVGA GeForce GTX 580 Superclocked (already purchased)
-Some 1000W PSU (undecided - I currently have a 850W OCZ GameXtreme)
I think the rest of my setup shouldn't really matter for my question

In reading the specs for the 2600k, it looks like there is only support for DDR3 1066/1333; I really think I want the Ripjaws 1600 series. I have verified the mobo supports up to DDR3 2133...will this make a difference? I don't plan on OC'ing the CPU initially past 4.0Ghz or so. Should everything run "stock" without any issues, even though the specs of the CPU do not show support for 1600 RAM? Sorry if this is a stupid question - I've seen posts online where people are running the same CPU and have DDR31600 RAM, but am not sure if this is due to an overclocked config, and I have not found anything stating the RAM is officially supported by this CPU.

Any advice would be very much appreciated!

Mike

Of course the 2600K supports more than 1333, where did you get that from? I've always thought that RAM speeds were dependent on the motherboard. Check your motherboard's QVL for RAM. The one thing it doesn't support is 2000MHz, so I have mine downclocked to 1866.

Oh and welcome to OCN.

Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't seen that it's not supported, but it is not listed on Intel's site as being supported, here:

http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=52214&wapkw=(2600k)

Maybe because the cpu was released before memory faster than ddr3 1333? Just a guess...

Thanks,

Mike

I use a pair of Kingston HyperX 1600, pretty much everyone gets the best out of new, fresh RAM. 2x4GB btw, $100

Thanks for the feedback, everybody! My worries have been put to rest and I'm going to move forward with the Ripjaws RAM. I was just worried since Intel's site only shows "Memory Types" as 1066/1333. Oh well!
