Recommend me some cans and a soundcard!

Alright guys I am in the market for some good quality cans and a soundcard to power them. I listen to mostly trance/progressive and some alternative here and there. I do play games such as BC2 and Starcraft 2 if that needs to be factored in. What would you guys recommend I should pick up. I would say my budget is no more than $250. Thank you for your input.

I have been eyeing the AD700s for quite some time now but the HD 555s look very sweet as well especially when modded to 595s. What is your guys' opinion on those two. And what are your opinions on this combo as well.

IMO, you're overpaying for the Xense. I find the PC350 combo to be stupid. If they ever get rid of the headphone combination with the Xense and just lower the price that'll be a sweet card to get for people wanting 5.1

2nd, the AD700s are a good choice for you. Trance, Progressive, Alternative aren't bassy types of music (At least the kind I listen to) and the AD700s sound better to me than the HD555s even modded. Basically, music sounds more lively and entertaining than on the HD555s.

However, the best your money will buy you in this range are the DT880s probably. 990s if you listen to trance that is more bassy (All trance I've listened to is high treble though tbh) and Alternative and Progressive from my music collection is typically not bassy so the 880s would be better.

HOWEVER, the DT880s crave an amp so..unless you're willing to invest in an amp for additional dollars, the DT880s are now out of your selection.

Can jump for the AD900 or A900s if you feel inclined to spend more, but I couldn't really justify spending the extra 110 dollars for them.

How much bass do you listen to? If you could dish out for an amp, the DT880s would have been a really nice choice, but I don't want to force you to spend a lot of money. It's just when you get into audio, your wallet goes out the window most of the time.

First off a big thank you for the insightful input. I listen to mostly Afterhours FM and the selection there varies. Vocal trance/progressive are 50/50. They would either have a nice bass going throughout the entire track or just half of it would be bassy right off the "slow" part of the song. Anyways, I have heard of DTs being the ultimate choice when it comes to trance/progressive fanatics but I probably wont be able to justify spending so much money on something like that. I was blown away by some $50 radioshack headphones with my current soundcard so I would imagine those headphones with amp would just be exhilirating. I do like the AD700s and would probably go with them. BTW, how much bass am I sacrificing by going that route instead of the DTs. And is it possible to link me some of those DTs and the amps necessary to drive these suckers? Also as far as soundcard what are my options?

Well, the headphones from Radioshack are probably not hard to drive and are low ohm because most people do NOT have amps so the benefit they'd receive from amping would be minimal to nil.

The AD700s have virtually no bass. Except for ear buds, they're the most bass light headphones I have ever listened to. On a scale of 1-10 they're like a 2. Maybe even a 1.5. So you're sacrificing a LOT of bass.

My honest opinion would be to sell the Xonar DX and step up to the Essence ST or STX(if you're only gonna' use the headphones).

As you can see though, going the DT route is quite expensive. You're looking at nearly 400 dollars of damage after you sell the Xonar DX. No joke.

In my opinion, the AT M50s(closed pair but more bass than the A/ADs) + Creative X-Fi Titanium HD would be a decent setup for your budget. Should come out to around ~$250-300...

AD700 for the best sound stage (imo in this price bracket of ~$100) or the M50 with a smaller soundstage (same price range) for "darker" sounds with a decent level of bass.

Lots of discussion to go through:

Yeh, I probably wont be able to live without that bass. Well if anything, my birthday is coming up in 2 weeks so maybe I can justify getting myself some DTs. Also, how much of an improvement is the amp really going to create? Will I be alright with just the DTs and a Xonar STX?

Not purpose having the DT's without an amp. Also, should get 600ohm version.

Well, that is out of the way. Which amp would you recommend for these headphones? I looked up the stick and the choices are quite a bit with range of prices.
