Is My PCI-E Slot Broken?

Thread Starter
I was doing some benching today on my EVGA P55 FTW motherboard. I had a GeForce 7350 LE in the top pcie slot, and when I was done with it I decided to switch over to my HD 4850. I uninstalled the nvidia drivers, and I did the whole driver sweep in safe mode, then I shut down and changed cards.

When I started it up with my 4850 in the top slot, it wouldn't display anything and got stuck on the "initializing display adapter" post code. Then I tried it in the second and third pcie slots, and it works in both of them. The same thing happens with my 4650 and 4870, nothing in the first slots, but they work in the other two.

The strange this is that when I put the GeForce 7350 back into the first slot, it works confused.gif

Why does my GeForce 7350 work in the first slot, but the rest of my cards don't? Is that slot broken somehow?

Have you tried a cmos reset? Also check to make sure there is nothing in the slot.

Sometimes a CMOS reset works. My HD4850 fails to initializes from time to time, usually when i need to open the case and mess around with cables. If i touch it, even with little strength, it fails, cuz it get unproperly seated on the slot. Don't know if that is happening to you, but i would try it, unless you are running it caseless.

Yeah, I have reset the cmos (I probably should have mentioned that in the OP), and there doesn't appear to be anything in the slot. I even blew out the slot with my compressor, just to be sure.

I'm running it caseless right now, but I've reseated it so many times that I'm sure it was seated properly at least one of those times.

Are you using the latest bios?
Sounds like a bios bug to me...

Could also be a partially fried slot, too. Those geforce cards are a lot weaker than the ATI card...7350 LE is like pants....isnt that as weak as a FX 5400 or something?
BIOS update should fix that, and if not, the slot is just fried....RMA?
BTW you know the HD 4850 requires a PCIE power connector, while that GF card runs just off the slot....

If the 6-pin power connector wasn't plugged in, he would start hearing a lot of beeps, and seeing 3 red led's on the 4850. but he mentioned a 4650 not working on the slot, that doesn't require power connector, so i would exclude that one. Like the above poster said, if a BIOS update doesn't solve the problem, RMA it, the slot might be broken...

Or try your GTX460 on the slot, if it works, it will get even more confusing... tongue.gif

Yes, my 4850 was plugged in tongue.gif

I'll try out my GTX 460 in the slot, and if that doesn't work I'll flash the bios. If all else fails I guess I'll just RMA the board.

My GTX 460 didn't work in the slot, so I did a BIOS flash, and that didn't work either. It looks like my only option now is to RMA the board. frown.gif

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, +rep to all smile.gif
