Intel i7 Extreme 975

Hi,

I have an Intel i7 975 on an ASUS P6T 2 Deluxe Motherboard.

Recently I started getting a 'CPU Fan Error' press F1 on startup, after doing a BIOS Flash update. I bought and installed an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 CPU Cooler. B which seems to have helped with the error message.

Both before and after getting the new fan update, the processor would get up to the high 70 degree range, and the low 80s in Dragon Age 2. This is slightly higher after the new fan was installed.

I recently did a Prime 95 blend stress test and the processor got as high as 90. I stopped the test at that point. Q-Fan control is enabled in the BIOS.

From looking at Hardware Monitor, it seems temperature drops extremely rapidly when the stress / load is ended.

Is there anything I can / should do to improve cooling? I am not overclocking at all - the CPU is running at stock 3.333 GHz.

Should I change any BIOS settings - the AI Tweaker is mostly on auto? Should I do anything else?

Sounds like your HSF isn't properly seated. Pull it off and reapply the TIM and be mindful as you reseat it. Note that the AC Freezer 7 wasn't designed for quads and may need to be replaced.

How are you applying the TIM? often times people apply too little or too much.

"NO CPU FAN" error is basically an error saying that no fan are connected to the CPU-Fan connector on the motherboard. if there isnt a fan connected there, you will get that error.

Hi guys,

Ok thanks for the advice. I have removed my old 'Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 CPU Cooler' entirely. Then I used some cleansing fluid to very carefully and thoroughly remove all of the thermal paste that had gunked up there. I was thorough and spent a long, long time until that CPU and socket was almost factory clean.

Then I installed a Corsair A70. I carefully used Arctic Silver 5 thermal paster. The cooler is HUGE. I had to take out the whole motherboard to put in the backing plate and a side case fan has had to be retired to make it fit.

However the cooling is dramatic. I have been running Prime95 for several minutes and it is stable around 70 degrees. Oh - and the CPU error went away too!

I am going to try a quieter BIOS Q-Control setting as it is a bit noisy. But problem solved temperature wise, methinks.

That's good to hear. I strongly suggest replacing the stock fans that came with the H70 with a pair of Noctua's or Gentle Typhoons. It would only cost around $30 and your ears would thank you for it.
