Possible to clone drives of different sizes?

Thread Starter
I have a 1tb and 500gb drive, I want to clone the 500gb to the 1tb, is this possible, the 500gb has windows installed on it and I want the 1tb to replace the 500gb.

If it is possible how do I do this?

A program like Acronis Home Edition will do that easily. If they are WD or Seagate drives, Acronis is free.

i beleive i have done this b4 with smaller drives so i would say yes
http://www.easeus.com/disk-copy/
or google cloning software as i cannot remember what i used
if im not mistaken it will leave the unused space unpartitioned.

very possible, ive done something similar myself. I used a bootable program called HD Clone, did drive to drive, and set the target parameters to match the source parameters EG the target drive would end up with a partition EXACTLY the same size as the source, with the rest unpartitioned. Provided you do a bit by bit clone instead of smart copy, windows wont know the difference and wont care.

Program aint free though (there is a free version, but is SLOW and limited), but its very good at what it does.

As long as the actual data on the source drive is less than the total space of the destination drive you can clone any size drive to any other size drive. If the amount of data on the 1TB drive is less than 500gigs you could clone it to the 500 if you wanted. Granted, it does take longer doing that, but it is definitely possible.

One of the nice features in Acronis True Image is the ability to control how the cloning process sizes the partitions. You can choose to keep the existing partitions the same size or manually select what size to make them on the new drive. This is especially nice if you have separate OS and Data partitions as you could keep the OS partition the same and allocate all of the additional space to the data partition. You could even leave the partitions the same size leaving you unallocated space to create a new partition.
