New build for Pops

Thread Starter
Dad wants a new computer, and, in his words, he wants a 'semi-hotrod.' All he does is watch youtube, surf the rest of the net, and store pictures off his digital camera.

I figured since sandy bridge's primary advantage over this x58 I have is oc'ing potential, I'd let him have my three month old 940, sabertooth mobo, and mushkin ram and get him all new stuff for the rest of the system.

I'll then run with the 2600k, ud4, and low voltage ram.

He doesn't need a 1 GHz OC. I think I do

Here's the list. What do you guys think? The main components will go in my sig rig, and my main components will go in his rig. He's coming from a p4, so it'll be light speed for him, yes?

*cough WAR EAGLE cough...*

Can't you just give him like a hand-me-down C2D and pocket $1000? What is he going to do with a 3.7GHz i7. I mean, seriously.

My thoughts exactly. Other than that, yeah that's as semihotrod-ish as you can get.

semi-hotrod look? Get him a cheap C2D, 8gbs of ddr2, side acrylic panel, and this for the win:

Now he'll know he's playing with hotrod v8 engine power..

Why give him such a "hot rod" if all he does is watch youtube and surf the net?

My boss asked me to do something similar a couple years ago when i7 first came out. He now has a $2500 watercooled Blu-Ray player lol.

Seriously, an Athlon II x4 ~3.00GHz, 4-8GB DDR3, a decent board, reliable PSU, large HDD, and plenty of LEDs/fans/clear side panel and crazy looking CPU cooler should be enough to satisfy him. All of which can probably be done around $600 or less for everything.

this ppl forget that amd are just as worthy as some i7's n i5's why spend money makin a build which wont even be stressed and end up bein a waste of money, not like u need a $1200+ build when a $500+ build will do the same thing

Get him a mid-range x3 or x4 PhenomII based system
-An SSD for his primary drive so it feels faster
-Maybe a bluray but ONLY if he'll actually watch movies on it / has it hooked up to a living room TV.

My dad asked me to build him a screamer for ~2000 this past summer. I did but it's complete overkill for what he needs, at least he should be good for the next 6-7 years, lol.

I think the biggest reason why he wanted that good of a computer because he doesn't realize that computers aren't becoming obsolete in 3-4 years anymore, nor are they as expensive. The last computer he built was $2500+ and that was a single-core Socket A system.
