Psh, I had to learn adb tricks just to get Android on my iPhone 1st-gen back in the days. I never missed a single step and got Froyo on that device. I'm more pro leet.

Really OP, you could have at least given Android a chance by rooting your DHD and make the appropriate fixes to volume and sound quality. It's really easy nowadays to do that, and whenever you need to take your phone for servicing you could just unroot the phone beforehand. No one would know, really.
He shouldn't need to root for an in-call volume problem, though. I have never had to adjust mine. Sounds more like a defective phone.

You're not helping.

OP,

Take the phone back to the store and even if they tell you it's fine, tell them it's not and suggest they open another phone, put your simcard in it and call the store and compare. You have rights and the store cannot simply fob you off. They can try if you let them, but you must stand up for your rights, mate. Demand a manager and always escalate the second the person you're dealing with refuses your reasonable requests.

Yes he is. People saying that rooting isnt an option are wrong. It's a viable option. Comparisons? Look at the 6990, **** is loud and hot, almost unusable loud and what do we tell people to do? Not complain and get another gpu, but to put a aftermarket heatsink on it or waterblock. Same with our cpu's, how many times have people just said to buy a new heatsink instead of complaining to intel/amd about poor cooling performance?

Rooting is free, takes a few minutes at most and has zero downsides if done correctly.

Also they wont open another phone just to appease you, unless its a refurb. Odds are they will have a working one on display that you can request to put your sim card in.

And tbh this is the first phone ived owned that has been shockingly bad in the speaker department.

Even a Nokia $50 pre paid had a better in call volume.

Most likely gonna swap the phone over to an Iphone 4 anyway.
Yeah HTC phones in general have bad volume. There are ways to boost in-call volume, however.

Edit : Found a few things looking around briefly.

A workaround.

Made for an Evo but should work. App should be able to at least minimize your problem I believe. Must be rooted.

Many ROMs have been modified to boost audio output by as much as 25%. I always recommend switching to a ROM of your choosing anyways. That way your phone isn't exactly like everyone else's. So I would suggest flashing to something else.

Lastly, note that Android has many different volume settings. Media, ringer, BT audio, headset (correct me if wrong on this one), etc. So make sure to press the volume up key any time or place that you think the audio should be louder. Just because you changed the audio in the home screen for example, doesn't mean that media will be boosted. (The home screen changes ringer volume.)

Overall your best bet is this thread.

Fellas I'm walking him through rooting it and installing a custom rom onto it(hopefully with a kernel that has the volume fix). Now lay off him!

He's not going to want that iphone after I'm done with him

Well so far with Jackeyjoes help ive managed to root / install a custom rom.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=984045 this one .

Now ive noticed In call volumes to be better and more of an acceptable level not perfect but better.

The back speaker also volume / sound quality (not sounding as tinny) has increased and i dont need to turn it up as much for the same volume.

Overall the phone seems smoother and runs better with the custom rom.

Does the rom have DSP manager pre-installed? If it does thats your first port of call.

No, if his phone has a faulty speaker it has a faulty speaker and rooting is not an option until he has a phone with a working speaker. My point is to return the phone and get one that isn't faulty, then, of course, rooting is a natural progression.

But rooting to fix a faulty speaker on a phone that should be covered by warranty should not be an option. Or maybe I'm just finicky and want my stuff to work correctly!

BTW, I'm running a Sense Starburst 1.3.3.3 ROM =D
