IMO Seemed a little low-end for his $500 budget but may work well with a sub. I never got to hear them though, they weren't in stock last fall when I did my auditions. Can anyone contrast these and the RP5/RP6? I'm curious...

Well sure, you are talking about Sony professional recording equipment which costs in the thousands.

Sony has basically sold out; their consumer line audio equipment are effectively miles behind smaller competitors who use quality products rather than their marketing team to sell.

sup

tannoy>rp5>rp6

im a big fan of mids/highs and i spend probably an hour and a half comparing these three

rp5 is better than rp6 in mid and highs, but worse in bass
tannoy is better than rp5 because MUCH clearer highs and mids, but less bass

ALSO
i had the option to turn on/off a 12' krk woofer ($350)? whilst comparing all three of these (with a flip of a switch, i could turn one on and the other off)

the tannoy really shined when it had the woofer with it, no flaws i could see in the 2-3 hours i was there, i went in the store with my mind DEAD SET on the rp6, but found out i was wrong

EDIT:
did not see he had a $500 budget, he could get some better monitors, but would be lacking a woofer
i would go with the tannoys and a dayton 10 or 12 inch sub, tat would be pretty close to $500

Thanks for the summary. Should help out the OP too...

I don't find your conclusion surprising, though. I was originally looking at RP6's or RP8's, but upon listening the whole series seemed severely lacking in mids/highs... I ended up with the VXT4's which are in another league - they aren't even remotely comparable to the RP's. See THIS POST for my little writeup a few months back. I listened to each pair for quite some time... probably 6 hours in total.

Unfortunately I can't recommend the VXT4's to this guy - combine them with a sub and you're way above budget The Tannoy + Sub combo is definitely worth some thought.

oke, so i have 2 combo's in my head.

1. 2 x KRK RP6 G2's with KRK RP 10 S subwoofer

2. 2 x Tannoy 601A's with Tannoy TS10 Subwoofer

So which one? option 1 or 2?

Where are you going to purchase them? If you get them from a physical store you can return them a bit easier if you don't like them.

I have never heard of the Tannoy's which doesn't mean that they are bad. I however have heard of the KRKs. I listened to the little brother of the RP6s the RP5s and they sounded really good.

To be honest I think going with either will be a great buy. Whatever you have now will be blown out of the water.

oh absolutley, the vxt's are a WAY different league, but waywayway out of my price range
they did sound much better than the rp series, i dont recall them compared to the tannoys though, but out of the 15 monitors they had in guitar center, the tannoys trumped them all
