Which cpu to pick? - Page 2

x2 on the Phenom II x2 555BE, I just built a rig yesterday for $500 CAD without a video card using the 555BE. I unlocked it to 4 actual cores no problem on the Gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H board. The CPU now shows up as B55BE

My 555 dual core runs crysis 1 and 2 perfectly ok with my 5750.

If unlock fails nothing happens, you can safely just go back to 2 cores.

The rig I built for < $500 was as follows:

CPU: Phenom II x2 555BE (Unlocked 2 extra cores to B55BE - Quad Core)
PSU: Coolermaster 500W
Case: Coolermaster Elite 310
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H
Ram: Patriot Series 5 2x2GB Kit = 4GB RAM
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Green 5400RPM 1TB
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

Granted I already had the windows copy but the total bill was $446.72

The guy I built it for doesn't play any crazy games only WoW, the onboard Radeon HD4250 is plenty enough to run WoW for now until he saves for an actual GPU.

For $1200 CAD you can build a VERY good rig, my sig rig cost $1150.xxCAD or so not including the monitors or peripherals (keyboard, mouse, headset)

Go with the Phenom II x4 965BE or 955BE

Nice build list. I'd recommend putting heatsinks over those VRM's for board stability. $40 more(in USD on Newegg) would get you a X6 1090T.

Yeah, that rig was definitely a budget build but a VERY good one for $4xx.xx I built it for, the customer wanted it right away, I wasn't able to get the x6 at a good price at the local shop we went too, I guess it's cause they had surplus 555BE's. Besides the customer I built it for doesn't need anything more than a dual core but I figured why not and unlocked the two extra cores.

My rig, the next updates will be an Asus Crosshair IV Extreme AM3+ board with either the bulldozer (if it is out and compatible) or i'll settle for a Phenom II x6 1100T BE.

I don't see how the OP isn't able to get AT LEAST a 955BE for that budget? $1200.00 CAD is a LOT of money, especially when you buy on newegg.ca which has some very good deals.

Sandy...

If you do plan on unlocking a 555 BE I would suggest finding a cheap board that has a VRM cooler.

What are you planning on spending between the board and chip?

There are so many chipsets for AMD that I have no idea what the hell I was looking at. Sorry I couldn't suggest anything.
