Home networking questions...

Here is the quick and dirty...

I have a home network consisting of EPB Fiber Optics. It is 30 up, 30 down. The fiber optics line enters downstairs and that is where my Lynksys WRT54GS router is.

I originally had a repeater bridge set up with another WRT54GS upstairs and my new computer (with no wireless card) hardwired to the router. This worked pretty well but I would consistently have times where the internet would get dropped. This was very annoying to me and my wife so I tried a quick solution.

None of the computer stores in the area had any internal wireless cards so I bought a Cisco Valet USB N/G/B adapter. It works ok expect that when I start the computer up it takes a couple minutes before the internet will work regardless of the fact that that the adapter says it is connected to the network. Plus I am only able to get about 12 up and 17 down with this set-up.

My questions are:
1. How much would an N router help with range and speed?
2. Is the USB adapter trash? If so I will return it and just get a card off of newegg.
3. Any ideas why the repeater bridge would randomly lose the internet?

USB adapters are awful - I'd strongly recommend getting a card, my cisco N card has never coughed once in 2 years.

With regard to the range question - I turned my router to G and then to N, and I noticed no signal difference. (I believe G is 100M and N is mean to be 300M or something...but I'd take that with a pinch of salt)

If you want more range the only real option is to buy a higher dB antenna for your router and pc.

As for why the bridge sometimes loses connection - I've no idea :s (crap hardware?)

I hate wireless stuff anyway, It's never worked brilliantly for me so I just stick to good ol' cat5.

17 mbps is probably the limit for both G and your WRT54GS.

Internal wireless NIC's with antennas have traditionally been a bit more reliable as far as connectivity in my personal experience.

Personally I'd snake a cable through the house and just use wired. But, in response to your specific questions:

1) You'd gain more usable range and actually be able to get around 30 mbit with N.
2) Which one did you get specifically? Some of them aren't that bad. Dropping of the wireless bridge between routers may indicate some other form of interference.
3) As stated, perhaps you have a congested area as far as wifi is concerned, someone turned on a microwave, neighbor has a 2.4 ghz cordless phone, signal sucks at penetrating the walls of your house, etc etc.

I have a WRT54GS in my basement with DDWRT on it and I have no problems with connectivity. I highly suggest getting one of these cards for each of your PC's http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-041-_-Product

I am running ddwrt on the second linksys router as the repeater bridge. Is there any way to optimize the bridge?

Show me real world performance of ~6.75 MB/sec download or LAN transfer over G.
Not going to happen.

General performance is going to be around 10-20 mbit depending on congestion in your area.

You could up the overclock the router for higher wifi output. See here http://www.overclock.net/networking-...gs-dd-wrt.html and here http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php...RT54G/GL/GS/GX

Overclocking the router's CPU frequency is completely irrelevant to anything pertaining to the wifi radio.

While he could increase the output power to the radio itself, depending on antenna and radio it may add a slight bit of range or simply increase noise on the transmission and worsen already existing connectivity problems.

I may just investigate and see how tough it would be to run ethernet up to this room. If that looks like it may be tough I could first see how much a wireless card helps and then possibly upgrade to an N router.

My laptop NEVER has connection issues so a good card may solve the issues.
