I would say RAM and GPU.

A new GPU will bring you more benefit in games before adding 2GB more of RAM will.

GPU first, RAM second.

GTA 4 would benefit from DX11? I would be spending over my budget for that, but whats more important, ram or gpu?

This is strange... On the graphics settings of the game it wont allow me to spend more than 1GB of ram, while i have 4GB...
Also when i check its working set on the taskmanager it says its using arround 1.5gb...

Which gpu would you recommend that doesnt get bottlenecked with the cpu?

I vote for 6870, but will have to go a little over your budget for a better noticeable upgrade.

I want to make it run 100% smooth biggrin.gif

Thanks for helping me out cheers.gif

Need more details of your setup, please. What CPU speed? Gaming resolution? Total RAM amount and speeds? PSU? Come on, give us the full spec details.

Your sig says you have 2gb not 4gb,also the settings regarding ram are reffering to video ram on your card not your system.

Ok firstly id like to draw your attention to my spec and the framerates I also get on this game and the expansions.

GTA4 = 55fps average
EFLC = 42fps average

1080p and all sliders on 25 with max everything else except night shadows which are turned to off. Im running a vanilla copy with no mods or anything.

Sure your gpu could use an upgrade but really you need more ram and cpu too. Ive got an ssd and that really helps the stuttering alot but still it needs more. I run my cpu at 4ghz too and I find its not really maxing out my gtx470 @ 750mhz. Not that I expect you to buy all of this but here is an idea of a system that would give you optimum gta4 spec.

2500K/2600K @ 5ghz (add noctua NH-D14 to take care of cooling)

8gb ram at least

SSD without cache to reduce latency (sandforce controller too)

gtx470 or higher although a higher card with more vram if possible as gta4 will eat about 1.45gb of vram if you jam all the sliders right up.

I know this may seem mental but this game is a hog and lots of people waste tons of cash on incremental upgrades trying to make it run smooth. So really if you are dead set on getting it smooth all the way ud be best off just waiting till you get sorted with hardware that exceeds the required need during all the really poorly optimized parts and believe me there are parts of this game that judder and stutter like crazy.

Apparently not many of you have played GTA IV?

Your CPU is the bottleneck, not GPU. As much as I love AMD setups, an AMD quad just isn't enough for GTA IV until you break over 4.0GHz or better....and even then, its still not quite fast enough.

A GPU upgrade would be the most beneficial thing. But it would literally ad NOTHING to GTA IV. I came from a 4850 to a 4890 to a GTX470 (all on an Athlon II x4 @ 3.7GHz). None of the GPU upgrades did ANYTHING to GTA IV framerates. Only after jumping over to an i5 did my framerates finally smooth out in that game.
