Your CPU is the bottleneck, not GPU. As much as I love AMD setups, an AMD quad just isn't enough for GTA IV until you break over 4.0GHz or better....and even then, its still not quite fast enough.

A GPU upgrade would be the most beneficial thing. But it would literally ad NOTHING to GTA IV. I came from a 4850 to a 4890 to a GTX470 (all on an Athlon II x4 @ 3.7GHz). None of the GPU upgrades did ANYTHING to GTA IV framerates. Only after jumping over to an i5 did my framerates finally smooth out in that game.

This may be true, but, his GPU is only capable of doing 30ish FPS on GTA4. Check out the benchmarks across the web: 4870 + GTA4.

If you built this rig just to play GTA4, you might want to consider what would make GTA4 run the best. I'm thinking you might look at an i5 cpu/mobo/ram upgrade. Also, check out Nvidia Surround or Eyefinity. GTA4 would be lots of fun playing it immersed in the gameplay.

No i didnt build it to play GTA, i just bought it and the weather, effects, and everything makes this game very enjoyable, it has the best graphics ive experienced (havent tried Metro 2033, Mafia II etc) but i think the engine is poorly optimized.

I wanna run it smooth but cant spend more than $200... maybe ill have to wait a few months or years...

Just as a little addendum. If current bios update support from the likes of gigabyte and asus is correct it would seem that bulldozer due in june will work in current AM3 mobos. So possibly you could negate the need for a move to intel and simply upgrade your cpu then. In the meantime you could get your gpu and ram boosted. Just a thought anyhoo.

Bulldozer will be in 4/6/8 core variants and the 8 core one will hopefully be on a par with a 2600K but don't hold me to that.

Yeah, it's your CPU and GPU that are holding you back. Dunno if you can get a solid upgrade for your current CPU socket that will give you much of an upgrade, if not, might be time to save up for a nice upgrade.

So ill just have to wait a few months/years then, thank you for helping me out with honest answers.

The thing is when these new bulldozers come out they will probably be way over my budget.. So maybe in the meantime i could save some money and in a few months get a new mobo to provide a solid 1.5v supply to the cpu and get to 4+Ghz
