It's different for everyone. I got bored of WoW as expansions came out, took breaks for 2-6 months came backand did the same thing if it got too boring/repetitive. Rift was pretty good, but I got bored of the grinding and leveling in it and stopped playing. Leveling is boring and always will be. You might get bored of either MMO for a different reason than say I or someone else have/will.

No, seriously.
Completely unnecessary. I don't go into the threads of games you play and bash them for no reason. I don't know why people feel it's acceptable to do with WoW/MMO's in general. It's/they're a game(s) just like any other.

I'm not going to vote because, as tombug posted, you can play the trial and see for yourself. Hm, seems Rift doesn't have a trial. Well, you can at least still try out WoW.

I have a great idea for you OP, get a trial for both and try them, don't listen to biased peoples opinions and form your own. I for one lean towards WoW since I've played it forever. But just make your own verdict.
To be honest, I've played both and I prefer WoW overall. I played rift for approximately a month, got to 50 and I just got bored of the end game content whereas WoW still has me interested even though I hit 85 quite a few months back. Just seems like there is more to do at end game, the environment is more developed and definitely most vast, and the gameplay is much better than in Rift. To anyone who's played Warhammer Online, you will know what i'm talking about in terms of Rift's gameplay and controls, it just doesn't feel right.

But like others have said, it's all about personal preference. One thing i can say that is universal for MMO's is the fact that friends or guilds make these games 100 times better. If you can find a good group of people to play with and shoot the **** then it will make your experience that much better.

Get Rift just for the simple fact that you will get bored of it in about a month. WoW will ruin your life.

I prefer wow, and I enjoy it.

Last week I only played for a few hours on Sunday running random instances with my social guild (yes haters, there are guilds for SOCIALISING! You don't have to play 3 hours a day to be in a guild).

Sometimes when I'm in the mood I can play for a good few hours a day for a few days in a row, but like last week I didn't fancy it, so didn't play it much. No one forces me to play it, I have free will unlike the haters that are abundant on the forums that can't control themselves or just like to make up horror stories based on the choices of others

I do suggest the free trial, although I would say the first few weeks of levelling (well..depends how fast you level, I was slow) is very boring.. but it picks up

Exercise some control, and there is no way to get addicted

Send me a pm if you want some more information or an invite to the game

Although I've never played WoW, I never liked the type of play/players that the game seemed to have. Population means a lot to me.

That said, I hear that Rift is very similar to WoW, except for the leveling system. I played the beta for Rift a LOT, and it really is a great game. I didn't get bored of it like some did, but, you can burn out on anything, given enough time. Back to that leveling system for a moment: I really really like how you can juggle classes, and build as you see fit. Sure, there'll be "best" builds for raids, etc, however, it does allow you to add a little flavor all your own. It reminds me of a simplified DDO system. It really is one of the best I've seen.

I say Rift! It's too cool not to, and getting in on the ground level allows you to ride the expansions as they come instead of playing catchup.

A caveat, though: If you have WoW playing friends, you may enjoy that more, as community matters. If you know noone in either, go for Rift.
