Personally, I wouldn't waste time or money on either of these. Played WoW for a while, but it got too repetitive. I tried Rift during the beta, but it seemed too much like WoW. To me, neither of these games would be worth buying and then a monthly fee to play.

That said, during the time I played WoW I did have fun and there were quite a few memorable experiences. I just don't think I'd want to play a game like that again because I enjoy FPS or hybrid FPS games too much now.

Ouch, I made a decent amount of money by selling my account when I quit playing WoW.

Of the two I would lean towards WoW for a few reasons.

It is extremely well established. If you were to stick with it for a while you would not have an issue finding others that you would get along with to play with.

And Rift is still quite new. I have tried several "new" MMOs that have essentially fallen apart within 6 months of release Age of Conan being one, Warhammer Online being another. Both had "great promise" and didn't deliver very well at all. And the subscribers left in droves.
Rift has potential but I have adapted a wait and see attitude. If it is still going strong and expanding in 6 months I may try it then. But I don't want to spend money on a game and then pay for the subscription to it, to have it fall apart in a few months. If I am going to leave a game it is on my terms not because the game died.

Never played WoW, I usually don't play MMOs, but I bought rift and so far I'm loving it. The rifts and invasions are quite fun, and the soul system let's you really customize your character with tons of options. I recommend it.

I've tried dozens of MMORPGs and WoW is the most established of them all.
There's quite a lot to do, even at cap and I found many of the players to be very friendly and helpful.

WoW > Rift. No question. Anything Rift does, WoW does better.

WoW HAS the best combat period. No one can argue with this. It is silky smooth.
